So Livejournal has shut down the
scans_daily community. They seem to be within their rights to do so, but I hope they'll reconsider. For those not familiar, s_d is/was a huge comix fan community with slashy foundations; members would post scans from their favorite (or least favorite) of recent, classic, or totally obscure comics, sometimes with snarky commentary or innuendo, sometimes not. The community rules skated the line of fair use, it's true, but they dictated that no more than half an issue could be posted in scans, along with other guidelines.
There were copyright issues, sure, but I believe the community was good for comics. I started hanging out at s_d a few years ago, and at the time I hadn't bought a comic since the '90s; before long I was once again making trips to comics stores, and buying up stuff I would never have tried otherwise. Creators like Warren Ellis and Gail Simone spent time at s_d, and Ellis even posted stuff occasionally. So many times I saw comments on posts like, "I must buy this IMMEDIATELY." Sometimes I was the one making those comments. There's no doubt in my mind that s_d sold comics.
