He's been my neighbor for 20yrs. I've known him since 1974 though. He's been more family then a neighbor. A week and a half ago he took a tumble out back. He did his usual of trying to foof off that he was hurting. At 86yrs old and all the medical issues he had, I knew he couldn't treat it lightly. Made him call his niece. She took him to the hospital where they said he cracked 3 ribs and developed a brain bleed in 2 spots. Spoke to his niece last weekend and she said that the hospital was moving him to Moss Rehab for 2 weeks. You know when you have that specter over your shoulder? YEah..we felt it. His niece was very skeptical but left it to the Dr's. I have been fighting a stomach bug so I couldn't go see him till today. Called Moss and they didn't have him listed as a patient. We figured they moved him somewhere else. Low and behold, his niece shows up today and dropped the bomb. Oscar Chavarria died early Thursday morning due to complications from his fall. 86yrs old. He lasted 30yrs longer than his Drs at the time projected. Only half of his heart was working for the past 10yrs. He beat the odds for so long. The past few months though....he seemed to be ready for it. Things were shutting down in him. He wasnt really eating anymore. His gait was unsteady. It was time. It is sad and a sin to lose him. It will not be the same without him. His niece said my sister and I could have anything of his we wanted to remember him by. He has 2 stained glass windows. I have requested them. She said to help ourselves to whatever pots and garden stuff in back we want. Hell I cant really go into the backyard at the moment. I keep expecting to hear his clearing of his throat and him puttering around. I have also requested to be told about the asking price of the house. I think he'd like it to stay with people who care.
