dancing ants

M. and I may be reaching new levels of tolerance with the colony of ants that seems bent on invading our pantry. I can't seem to figure out what they're actually getting into, there aren't any crumbs, I vacuumed, I figure they must be trying to establish a new colony or something inside our cupboard. Should probably do something about that (make them pay rent?) but for now, we're both highly amused by their antics.
First of all, the ant traps proved effective for about 5 minutes, but either a) they ants learned to avoid them or b)they're so chock full of ants at the moment they're no longer effective.
However, we put one of the hexagonal traps into the 2-way traffic of ants going into the cupboard...and they treated it just like a roundabout! i think they were possibly as disgruntled as lawrence citizens with the new traffic obstacle, but I'm bad at reading ant emotional timbre.

I've been vacuuming up the matzah crumbs, in an effort to control the horde of insects, which includes vacuuming up the ants. While I do get a capricious, godlike sense of power from the experience, I also feel pretty cruel and evil. I mean, its like a tornado-vortex sucking you from your appointed hive rounds. I felt bad. And they just came back anyway.

maybe I'll suck it up and get a can of Raid, side effects be damned. But not yet. I'll need something to entertain me during study breaks this weekend and the ants are a fascinating project (albeit unintentional).

P.S. is my environmental biology background blatantly obvious from this post?

I'd think they were installing cameras in trees, too.
