You will get a little schmutzy*

*Yinglish for "dirty," from the Yiddish "Schmutz"= "dirt", or as defined by Urban dictionary, "Used by Jewish mothers to identify that you've got some kind of crap on your face."

Wednesday morning's garden tour went well. I had a group of 25-30 kids and staff from one of the synagogue day camps. Kids were much tinier than I expected (ages 4-8) since our last group was teenagers we could put to work. Had some concerns about the kids making it up the hill to the garden, but they were troopers. I think they got a kick out of seeing vegetables come out the ground, smelling aromatic herbs (dill, basil, parsley, hyssop), smelling a horseradish root("That smells like maror" - the bitter herb of the Passover seder), and getting a little dirty. We talked about the mitzvah ("commandment", "good deed") of providing food for those who are hungry and I described how the produce of the garden will be distributed throughout the Kansas City community (both Jewish and non Jewish). Luckily, there was a nice cloud cover, so it wasn't too miserably hot.
I hope they had fun, I know I did.

Trying to convince M. that microwaving beaten eggs to make an "omelette" in a plastic tupperware container is a bad idea. I suggested he use either a pyrex glass bowl or a corning ceramic ramikin (both microwave safe) to minimize his contact with BPA, pthalates and other endrocrine-disruptors that leach out of polycarbonate plastics during heating. I pulled up all kinds of journal articles, sent him links to the NY Times Topic on Bisphenol A, but to no avail. I think at this point he is being stubborn merely for theatrical purposes. "It's bio-accumulating in your fat cells!" I railed at him. Maybe it is only because I feel guilty about the eventuality of my synthetic estrogen-containing pee ending up in the estuary and feminizing the fish. Or maybe it's historical. Even grandma Fanny would never put hot liquids in plastic containers, preferring to use glass jars to store her chicken soup and vegetable soup. I have followed her tradition, with my collection of mason jars, which I use for storing soup rather than canning pickles or jam.

The trailers for Cowboys & Aliens make it seem unusually awesome for a summer movie. M. and I agree on this (which is a rare occurence!)

Actually, having been thinking a lot about liberated environmental toxins from my liquidated adipose tissue as I begin to lose weight. I probably now have higher levels of exogenous chemicals in my bloodstream that when they were safely tucked away in my flub. Is this a bad thing or will my liver simply clean them out eventually? Have another WW mtg tonight. Hope I continue to improve. Am getting pretty good about tracking eating and cultivating mindfulness. M asked, "So what do you do at the meetings?' "Well," I said, "It's kind of like AA for people who like cookies, except there are no steps and you don't have a sponsor. Actually it's nothing like AA, but I still like cookies." M throws up his hands in despair of me.
