The Big Necessity: The unmentionable world of human waste and why it matters by Rose George.

I haven't finished it yet, but now I know an overview of the history of sanitation (in the context of meaning where people excrete poo), Japanese robotic washer toilets and the life of the London municipal sewer maintenance crew.

If you stilldon't know why poo matters, you also have to read The Ghost Map by Stephen Johnson, about how Dr. John Snow discovered the cause of the 1854 London cholera epidemic.

And dumping sewage back into our drinking water supplies is really kind of dumb. We're downstream of ... Topeka. ummm, Yay?
