Out of the Darkness

For those who don't know many parts of the northeast got ravaged by a fierce Ice Storm. On thursday night at 9 pm the power in my home went out. I figured by morning it would be back on no big deal. The house was fine to sleep in so off to bed I went! Throughout the night I heard many pops and cracks- I didn't think much of it. I awoke at 7am- pretty fucking cold, and still no power to my mom saying "Holy shit" I get out of bed " Meg you need to come look outside" I was not prepared for what I saw! Our street was decimated. We live on a small private dirt road, lines were down tree branches littered our yard, the street, the restaurant next door. my mom and I got into the car drove around, went down to my good friend jennas dads house- completely destroyed worse than ours! Tree branches hanging precariously from powerlines over the street!

Despite it being scary it was one of the most breathtaking things I have ever seen! I wish I took pictures, but sadly my camera is lost. It was astounding really. My Father owns a small hardware store- he had no power but god bless him he was open- they were all bundled up with their calculators out- within hours he was sold out of extension cords, propane, fire wood, batteries, flashlights, rope, it was a sight. People were nice, and polite, and friendly, and all sharing their stories, you would think this would bring out the worst in people- however people sometimes surprise you. What I saw was mostly good!

I was able to stay with people, Aaron, and Cat- who was prepared to let me move in because our original power out estimate was wednesday! Luckily our power came back on Sunday night at about 9:30.

I work at the Senior Center- which as of 2pm today is the official shelter so my boss and co-workers spent the morning setting up Cots and getting supplies ready. I truly hope that families are able to return to their homes safetly soon! Things like this tend to put it all into perspective- and make you feel fortunate for what you have.
