Firstly, thank you to everyone that wished me a Happy Birthday. It's been an interesting day so far. :)
Today, I took an adventure... actually, I just got really freaking lost, but we call it an adventure because that makes it sound semi-intentional. I went with my brother and sister to the British food store today and after getting terribly lost, stopping for lunch and trying again, we made it!
The store was small, but quaint and there was an older lady there who was just so sweet and chatty. It was really nice and atmospheric since she is actually English and had a wonderful accent. She was really quite amusing.
(Side note: A few doors down from her there was an Australian Bakery. This town is freaking awesome.)
Anyway, I looked around and saw a bunch of things that you guys suggested and ended up getting a few different things.
- Jaffa Cakes
- Milk Chocolate Digestives
- Penguins
- Smarties
- Wispa
- Crunchie
- Curly Wurly
- Flake
I wouldn't really know how to rate my favorite to least favorite. I can just say that I didn't really care for the Curly Wurly and I found Crunchie to be the most surprising. Wispa is the most like something you'd find here.
Jaffa Cakes - These were the things that I was most excited about and I'm not quite sure what to think of them. I like them well enough, but the orange jelly in the middle takes a moment to get used to. I wasn't expecting it to be quite as tart as it was. The orange almost tastes generic. (Note: I am eating Jacob's and not McVitie's because that's what she had, is there any discernable difference between the two?) The 'cake' is kind of bland, but the jelly and chocolate ramp it up and make it more interesting.
I'll definitely finish the two boxes that I got, but I guess coming from America (a land coated in sugar) I expected it to be a touch sweeter, even after knowing that UK doesn't drown their sweets in sugar.
Milk Chocolate Digestives - I have to say, so far... I'm not a fan. Maybe I'll like them better with a cup of tea? I know they're generally meant for dunking. By itself, it's vaguely reminiscent of a graham cracker.
Penguins - For some reason, I was expecting something spongy. It is sort of a soft treat though. The only thing that I can think to compare it to is the Oreo, but this isn't really anything like the Oreo. ...I'm not complaining. I like this far better. Not an Oreo lover.
Smarties - These were interesting to hear about because we have something called Smarties over here, but it's completely different. They're tart, chalky pieces of candy here, but these Smarties are more comparable to M&M's... however, I've found that I find the Smarties far more enjoyable.
Wispa - This chocolate tastes VERY similar to a Three Musketeers that we have here. They look different, but the taste is near identical as far as I can tell. Needless to say, I'm a fan.
Crunchie - This one was strange, it's a very sleek looking chocolate and that alone is sort of misleading in what you find inside. I admit, it does say "with golden honeycombed center", but the golden part of that sentence seemed to escape my eyes. I wasn't quite sure what they meant... Now I do.
This is probably the most unique thing that I got on my trip there. The taste is almost like a soft, crunchy toffee wrapped in chocolate. It definitely lives up to its name. I think I'm a fan.
Curly Wurly - Also another one that I wasn't quite sure what it was. When I opened it up, it looked quite promising. The design of it is really unique and pleasing, but the caramel left a lot to be desired. I'm not really a big caramel fan anyway. I hate how sticky it is and this one was a really bland mixture. Like you, I blame it on my taste buds being geared toward sugar too.
Flake - This was interesting, the design of it I found to also be unique and pleasing. It's like a muted sort of chocolate, but I find that I actually don't mind that fact. It's rather good.
Someone said I should try Coleman's Mustard, I actually did find that, but didn't get it. They also suggested Branston's Pickle and they didn't have that. I saw Marmite, but I wasn't brave enough. Saw Hobnobs, but I didn't get them, I'm really not into hard textures and I didn't think that I'd end up enjoying it.
I also saw something of interest, it was called Angel Delight and came in a Strawberry flavor. I almost got it, but didn't. Can anyone give me their thoughts on that?
