So, for the next few weeks I'm working at the switchboard at Park Tudor, my old school, which I attended from fourth grade till senior year. I'm in the Lower School, and the cutest thing happened this morning!
The Lower School got out at 12 today, for some reason, and the teachers decided to have a "gingerbread man-hunt." A few teachers would come up to the desk, with a bunch of kids trailing behind, and the teacher dramatically asked, "kids, will you explain what happened?!?" And the truth finally came out, fragmented and distorted, that they were trying to catch the gingerbread man who'd escaped from the oven. One kid exclaimed, "I can smell him, he musst be around!" I explained that I had indeed seen the gingerbread man, and that he'd ducked into Mr. Mitchell's office.
During the course of the hunt I kept hearing teachers explain that they'd seen the gingerbread man, but he'd run off too quickly, but he'd left some icing/sprinkles behind. The kids kept saying things like, "Wow, he's fast!" and things like that, it was ADORABLE.
Finally, they found him, and one kid was worried they'd lose him again, and suggested the teacher break off its legs like they did in Shrek. The teacher patiently explained that she had him tightly, and he wasn't going to get away again, so there was no need to break his legs. I thought that was hilarious.
It was amazing how the kids were so enthralled, and they seriously believed they were after the elusive cookie. I guess I've been away from kids too long, because I've become used to people taking things so literally and logically not being "gullible" and believing in "ridiculous" ideas. It was great to see how much fun the teachers had, too. Even the director of the Lower School (like a principal) got imaginative and excited and had the kids search his office and gave them all a mint.
