--

Mac watched as Parker said goodnight to Logan. Sitting up from her position lying on her bed, she asked her roommate incredulously, “What are you doing with Logan?”

“Nothing. We just had dinner and watched a movie.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Why? What’s the problem?”

“Are you crazy? You can’t date Logan.”

“It wasn’t a date.”

“Dinner and a movie sounds like a date to me.”

“Mac, it wasn’t a date. It’s just two friends enjoying each other’s company.”

Mac looked at her skeptically. “That better be all it is.” She watched as Parker gathered some clothes to shower and change.

Veronica was not going to like this.

--

Wallace waved his friends goodbye as he parted ways with them to meet up with Veronica in the library. Taking a shortcut through the cafeteria, he spotted Logan having lunch with a blond. As he made his way through the maze of tables, he saw that it was Parker.

He stopped and frowned.

They were laughing and smiling at each other, not unusual between friends, but there was something else there.

He thought for a moment, then decided against approaching them and continued on his way to the library.

Veronica was not going to like this.

--

Mac spotted Logan across the quad on his way to class. She called his name and rushed to join him.

“To what do I owe the pleasure of being called and told to ‘stay’ like a dog?”

“I needed to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“I know it’s none of my business, but I really think you should be careful of the way you act towards Parker.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I don’t want you to lead her on.”

“Again, I repeat, what are you talking about?”

“The dates, the phone conversations. She might start to think that something is going on… between the two of you.”

“Nothing’s going on.”

“Does she know that?”

“We’re friends. That’s it.”

“I know that and you know that, but Parker’s beginning to feel… more.”

“Really?” Logan said grimly.

“Just make sure she knows that all she’s going to be is your friend.”

--

Piz sat at the foot of Wallace’s bed, while Wallace worked at his desk. “So, I hear Veronica and Logan broke up again.”

Wallace winced, dropping his pencil before turning to face his roommate. “And?”

“Is she okay?” Piz asked, fishing for info.

“She’ll be fine.”

“Do you think they’re over for good this time?”

“Piz, look, man, I’ll level with you. Veronica and Logan are complicated. They have history, the kind that’s all mixed up and mind numbing for anybody not involved to understand. You don’t just end things when you’re in a relationship like that.”

“So you’re saying they’re not over.”

“I’m saying, I don’t know. I don’t think anybody knows.”

“But they’re not together now.”

“Not officially.”

“Do you think Veronica would be interested in going to a concert with me? You see I’ve got these tickets-”

“Did you not hear what I just said?”

--

Mac returned to her room and found Parker trying out outfits. “Hot date?”

“No, just dinner with Logan at the cafeteria.” She held up a pink sweater. “Do you like?”

“I don’t think you should be asking me for fashion advice.” Mac dropped her things by the foot of her bed. “You do realize that you’re acting like you’re preparing for a date?”

“Of course not. Is it so wrong that I want to look nice? There are a lot of people that eat there. Maybe I’ll see someone interesting.”

Mac didn’t buy it. “You like him, don’t you?”

“Who are you talking about?” Parker laughed awkwardly.

“Who do you think?”

Parker dropped the sweaters and slumped down on her bed. “I don’t know how it happened. He’s just so sweet… and funny… and I feel safe with him.”

“You know this isn’t going to end well for you.”

“I promise not to whine to you when he breaks my heart.”

Mac looked at her grimly. “That’s not exactly what I meant.”

--

Wallace sat down in an empty chair across from Logan. “We need to talk.”

“That seems to be a growing trend.” Logan put down the book he’d been reading for class.

“Look, despite the fact that you and V are no longer an item, I still consider you a friend. So as your friend, I’m going to give you some advice. Don’t date Parker.”

“What makes you think I’m dating Parker?” Logan groused.

“Who are you sitting here waiting for?”

The white boy muttered, “I’m not dating Parker. We’re just friends.”

“Are you sure she feels the same way?”

“Even if we aren’t just friends, why should anyone care if we date? We’re both single and unattached.”

“Are you?”

“Am I what?”

“Unattached?”

Logan’s mouth clammed shut.

“You can’t date Parker.”

“I have to move on.”

“By dating one of her few friends?” Wallace studied Logan. “You know Duncan did the exact same thing.”

“Duncan,” Logan swore the name. “Why does everything come back to him?”

“Because a lot of her trust issues lead back to him.”

“And she forgave him for it.”

“No, she didn’t.”

“Of course, you’d say that. You’re her BFF,” Logan said glibly.

“Being her best friend doesn’t make me blind. You think I didn’t notice that she never called Duncan on all the crap he pulled? I noticed. Veronica was a different person around him. She was almost normal. But V’s not normal. She’s a one woman truth seeking machine, who thinks the worst of people before seeing any good.” Wallace continued, “And she never shared that part of her life with him.”

“But she did with me.” Logan fiddled with his sleeves.

“She trusts you more than either of you realize.”

“But she can’t forgive me for what I did.”

Wallace shrugged. “I don’t know what you did or why she ended things. But you need to know if you want to keep the chance of getting back together alive, you won’t date Parker.”

Logan pondered his advice for a moment. “She didn’t tell you what I did?”

“She said I didn’t need to know.”

“I slept with Madison Sinclair while I was in Aspen over the winter break,” Logan said candidly. “Do you think there’s a chance she’ll ever forgive me?” he asked bitterly.

“That’s difficult to say.” Wallace was staggered. “I mean… Madison Sinclair. Anybody else, I would say yes, no problem. But-”

“Madison Sinclair. Exactly.” Logan dropped his chin to his chest. “I pour my heart out to her voicemail and she doesn’t even respond. A song was dedicated to her on the radio and nothing.”

“You had a song dedicated to her?” Wallace smirked.

“Long story.”

“What song?”

“Forget about the song.”

“It’s been what? Two weeks since breakup number four? You’ve given her space. If you want her back, now would be the time.”

“Like she hasn’t already moved on.”

“No, but I know someone who’s about to move in.”

--

Mac was surprised when Veronica sat down beside her during the PHAT meeting. “Hey, what are you doing here?”

“I find I need something to actively and vocally hate at the moment.”

“So you’re not here because of your love for animals.”

“Although I love the animals - no, not currently.”

“So what - or who - are we redirecting rage from?”

Veronica glared at a spot to the left of Bronson, who was starting the meeting. “Parker.”

Mac’s mouth opened and closed, trying to think of the right response. But all she could come up with was, “Oh.”

Veronica continued in a hushed whisper, her eyes still shooting daggers at the spot on the wall. “I’m all for Parker taking that leap and finding a nice guy, but is there a reason she decided to start with my boyfriend? There are three billion other males on the planet, why did she start with Logan?”

“They’re just friends,” Mac said lamely.

“Don’t, okay. You don’t have to hide it from me. I’ve seen them together. How couldn’t I? It’s like they’re flaunting their relationship, rubbing it in my nose.”

“No flaunting,” Mac whispered urgently. “They’re not dating.”

Veronica frowned for a moment. “They’re not,” she repeated, as if trying to grasp the concept.

“Of course not. Logan’s totally in love with you. He would never do that to you.”

“He would if he was being a jackass,” Veronica mumbled. She thought a moment. “Wait, Logan wouldn’t, but Parker would?”

“I didn’t say that,” Mac blurted.

“You didn’t not say that either.” If looks could kill, the wall would have been decimated. “I can’t be here right now.” She stood and stormed out of the meeting.

Mac looked helplessly between Veronica and Bronson. In the end, she decided to give Veronica some space.

When the meeting was finished, Bronson joined her. “Did I do something to offend Veronica? Because she looked like she wanted to kill me.”

Mac shook her head reassuringly. “It’s not you she wants to kill.”

--

Wallace noticed the interaction between Parker and Veronica.

Parker was being her usual perky and animated self, while Veronica was stiff and awkward with a hint of resentment and loathing.

He was sure though that his best friend was still polite and courteous.

Veronica gave some excuse and walked off, leaving Parker standing there slightly confused by the exchange. She spotted Wallace. “Is Veronica alright? She seemed… a little off.”

“Seemed perfectly normal to me. How else was she supposed to act around the friend chasing after her ex?”

“There’s nothing between Logan and I.”

“Of course not. Logan’s too hung up on Veronica to let anyone new in.”

“So what’s the big deal if we are friends?”

“The big deal is that you want there to be more,” Wallace shook his head, “and that’s just not in the friend code.”

--

From her vantage point, Mac saw Veronica’s cold reception of Parker, followed by Wallace’s quick exchange. Her eyes flitted off to land back on Veronica.

The blond had made it across the quad before being intercepted by Logan.

Although she couldn’t hear the words traded between the volatile couple, she could tell by their expressions that neither was pulling any punches.

In the end, they gave each other hurt looks before simultaneously turning around and parting ways.

Mac grabbed her bag and rushed after her. “Veronica! Are you alright?”

Putting on a brave face, she nodded, “I’m fine.”

“Really, because that looked intense.”

“Well, it’s Logan,” Veronica said helplessly. “There’s just…”

“Something about him?”

“Yeah.”

“You love him.”

Veronica hesitated, but she nodded. “Yeah.”

“So is what he did so bad that you’d rather spend your life alone and miserable?”

“Of course I want to be with him.”

“Then why aren’t you?”

“Because I can’t stop seeing them together.”

“Seeing who together?”

“Logan and Madison.”

“Sinclair? Logan cheated on you with Madison Sinclair?”

Veronica shook her head. “It was when we were broken up.”

“So he technically didn’t cheat… and you didn’t actually see them together.”

“But my mind is known for its overactive imagination. Once the idea got in here,” she tapped her temple, “millions of situations keep playing out in my head.”

“That explains the dark circles,” Mac said sympathetically.

“I’ve been working with my dad on Dean O’Dell’s case, trying to keep my mind off of it. Hasn’t actually been working.”

“Maybe you should go out and do something fun. That might take your mind off of… things.”

Veronica thought for a moment and said reluctantly, “Piz did invite me to go to a concert with him.”

She went off before Mac could stop her. The brunette sighed to herself, “That’s not exactly what I meant.”

--

“What’s with that look on your face?” Wallace noticed his roommate lying in bed with an idiotic grin.

“I’m going to the concert with Veronica.”

Wallace shook his head, “You’re just setting yourself up to get hurt.”

“No, no, no. You see, when she gets to know me and she sees what a great guy I am, she’ll totally want me.”

“She already knows you and to her, you’re just a harmless puppy. A love sick puppy at that.” Wallace dropped his things on his desk before heading to his closet to change. “Sorry, man, but you’re just not Veronica’s type.”

“I’m a nice guy.”

“Exactly. Veronica doesn’t date nice guys.”

“What about the last boyfriend you were telling me about? What’s his name - Duncan?”

“You mean the dude that fled the country and is wanted for kidnapping. You think that makes him a nice guy?”

“No, but before all that, he was pretty nice.”

“And before all that Veronica was nice too. She’s not exactly nice anymore.”

--

“Parker’s not here.” Mac looked wearily at her caller.

“I know,” Logan responded. “I came to ask for your help with something.”

“What exactly do you need help with?”

“I want to win Veronica back.” He paused, “I need to win Veronica back.”

“What makes you think I’ll help you with that?”

His earnest expression dropped. “She told you.”

“About you and Madison? Yeah. Veronica and I have that in common. We both despise the heinous bitch with a passion.”

“So I guess that means you’re not going to help me.”

“I don’t think I could even if I wanted to.” Mac stared up at him. “The way I see it, the only thing stopping Veronica from being with you is the image of you and Madison floating in her brain. Make her stop picturing that and she’s yours.” Glancing away for a second, she added, “But the way Veronica likes to obsess about things, I doubt that’s going to happen.” She moved to close the door. “I’m sorry, but I can’t help you.”

“Wait! Can you at least tell me where I can find her?”

“Right now? She’s at a concert with Piz.”

His posture stiffened and his jaw clenched. “Where?”

--

The door to his dorm opened. Wallace smirked, “You’re back early.” He glanced at the clock. “In fact, you’re back really early. Did you even make it to the concert?”

“Oh, we made it. Paid for parking and everything.”

“But?”

“Logan showed up just as we were about to go in. Said he wanted to talk.” He slumped down on his bed in misery. “She went with him.”

“Tough break, man.” Wallace tried to be sympathetic, but he couldn’t keep the grin off his face.

“Say it.”

“Say what?”

“‘I told you so.’ You were right.”

“I told you so.”

“There’s like some inexplicable magnetic pull between them that keeps drawing them together. Or she’s just addicted to him or something.” He shot up to a sitting position. “Do you think she needs help breaking free of him? Maybe she doesn’t actually want him. Maybe she’s just waiting for someone to come along and save her from him.”

“Maybe you’re delusional and you should check yourself into a psych ward. She loves him. I don’t see why I have to keep telling you that.”

“He’s not right for her.”

“Now I know you’re really delusional. Logan’s perfect for her. If you knew her at all, you’d see that.”

--

“Would you look at that?” Wallace grinned.

Mac, Piz and Parker turned to see what he was looking at.

Veronica was walking toward them, hand in hand with Logan.

“They got back together?” Mac smiled. “When did this happen?”

“They’ve been discussing things for a couple weeks.” Wallace waved at them. “I guess they finally worked everything out.” He called out to Veronica, “Hey, super fly, how’s it going?”

“Good,” she smiled up at Logan. “Really good.” She looked back at them. “We just stopped to say ‘hi’. Logan’s taking me out.”

“Where are you headed?” Parker asked, trying to suppress her jealousy and disappointment.

“It’s a surprise. He won’t tell me.”

“You’ll find out soon enough,” Logan grinned at his girlfriend. “Come on, let’s go or we’re going to be late.”

“Bye,” she waved cheerfully and allowed her boyfriend to drag her away.

“He looks happy,” Parker remarked grudgingly.

Piz nodded and admitted, “She looks happy.”

Mac and Wallace exchanged looks. “Finally.”
