SNSD is undoubtedly the top girlgroup in Korea right now. Apparently they're also the top artist period in Korea in terms of sales, beating out even megastars Rain and Lee Hyori. We'll see if they can hold on to that lead as Suju continues to sell and Big Bang comes back, but it might be safe to say that any further sales of Oh or RDR will be ( Read more... )

One fairly significant thing you've not mentioned is that those are OFFLINE, physical sales, and ONLINE music stores certainly account for a lot of sales! Oh! has indeed sold well over 200 000 albums.

Also, you mention international sales of SNSD but those numbers are Korean sales only. So we're not sure how much they've sold in total, though obviously less than the jpop numbers you mention.

Of course Japan has almost twice the population and Korea has an even more developed IT technology, with faster broadband and wider access (=more piracy), but outside of that I'm not sure what the explanation is.

But whatever the reason I'm not especially eager for Korea to adopt the suspect business model of a group like AKB48 to try and gain more sales.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that I don't want to see Kpop descend into even more wallet-rape shenanigans(although from Hyomona's rant on the shittiness of the RDR package it might be that some of the goodies from AKB48 are better). It's just boggling my mind how AKB48 has achieved these numbers that obviously transcend wota power, especially when previously girl idols were the dirty secret niche and AKB48 is notorious for exploiting the darker sides of fans, not the least of which is having that shameless sexuality, from underage girls no less ( ... )

Yeah, it's interesting how k-pop would in one way SEEM like the more substantial thing, based on internet talk/ presence, and even random friends of mine who have heard about k-pop artists or songs and never one word about j-pop.. But that the J artists sell so much more. I guess that's why k-pop companies are so eager to get into Japan, even with new groups like 4minute. But I guess part of your point is that these huge sales are not only about japan, but AKB48 specifically? That they're unique even in japanese terms ( ... )
