The Soshi Follies: a musical revue

Jan 16, 2010 17:04

Key:
1 A song I think that their talents are very suited for, usually vocally.
2 Songs whose lyrics seem very relevant in my opinion. For the most part, though, consider the lyrics OUT of their original context
3 Absolute crack. I want to see this covered just because.
4 A song to be sung to the girl(s) in question by someone else.
*Some of the songs I found to be their best when arranged in a certain way not found online yet, so I've uploaded those versions to a VOX account. I apologize for the talking beforehand, I'm excerpting from a radio show and I like hearing the tidbits when they come up on my ipod, but here they aren't relevant at all. Edit 11/2010: Vox went down so those songs and videos are temporarily gone. I'll be looking for another avenue of upload.

WARNING: I highly recommend that you DO NOT attempt to watch all of the links in one sitting. There are over thirty numbers, and I thought of them over the course of the week, taking two days more to compile and edit. All of that can't possibly be digested in one go.

Opening: A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody4 -The Great Ziegfeld-
Why not, use the ridiculous staging in there too.

Now that you've been properly awed by the ridiculousness that was the Pretty Girl Staircase of DOOM, here's an alternate opening number, equally ridiculous: Here's To The Ladies -Ziegfeld Follies- "This is the mixture, to start the picture, so bring on the beautiful girls!"

Taeyeon: Huh, it came out all Streisand and Garland. Belters <3
Don't Rain on My Parade1 -Funny Girl- pleasepleasepleaseplease cover this irl please
People1 -Funny Girl- But as we all know from her drama OST songs, Taeyeon can also take on those ballads without belting but still remaining delightfully clear and emotional. This song gives me chills.
You Made Me Love You1 -Broadway Melody of 1938- I guess it would be "Dear Mr. Insung" or Mr. Henney or whatnot. Whoever it is is going to die from happiness.
By Myself 1&2 -The Bandwagon- Oh, leader.

A Couple of Song and Dance Men1(HyoTae) -Blue Skies- They even do imitations! :D

Hyoyeon: Turned out pretty SRS BSNS.
Singin' in the Rain remix1&3 -Singing In The Rain- Heh, someone already did a video mash-up of the remix and Boa. IT IS FATE.
I Wanna Be a Dancing Man1 -The Belle of New York- See why I got so excited seeing her learning tap dance at WDS?  This is what I was brought up on.
Broadway Melody2 -Singing In The Rain- There doesn't need to be all of the staging as in the vide(despite its awesomeness, setting up that romantic storyline just wouldn't work), I just found that Gene was the best in really bringing out the lyrics, from "Broadway always wears a smile" to "Gotta dance!" Actually, in terms of getting a feel for the lyrics, you can stop watching the video at around 3:30. Shortly afterward is the scene where I got my icon from though, lol. And Cyd, if you want to imagine that kind of cracktastic HyoRi. XD
Rose's Turn2  -Gypsy- How did I end up giving her such a tragic song? D: But yeah, DEFINITELY take the lyrics out of context from the show. Rose is not actually a good person.

Sooyoung: Wow, the song styles are all over the place, but still mostly crack.
Silvertongue Medley: Trouble -The Music Man-/ There Is a Sucker Born Ev'ry Minute1 -Barnum-
Don't be the Bunny*3 -Urinetown- She'll have a waggling mustache and bowler hat, wear a gigantic trenchcoat and carry a cane. May possibly also involve Sunny as the daughter.
A Lady Loves1&3 -I Love Melvin- Preferably the glam version, but the country girl version is still fine, as the lyrics kind of apply in either case, and Sooyoung excels at these cutesy-but-sexy numbers.

Food Glorious Food3 (all) -Oliver!- I'm kind of surprised no one's made a OPV setting Shikshin Shidae clips to this song.

Jessica: Surprisingly I couldn't find songs about not judging books by their cover or being cold.(Thanks Frank!) So lots of crack. Hey she's the one who picked Barbie Girl!
You're Sensational2 -High Society- Make way for the sensational Fair Miss Frigid Air.
They say it's Wonderful*1 -Annie Get Your Gun- Some of the pitch-shifts require absolute control in order to maintain the dynamic changes trying the emotion behind the song, so who better than Jessica?
Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend3 -Gentlemen Prefer Blondes- It's Jessica crack! :D Being entirely too exaggerated in pink is like her forte! Bonus Shinee being her poor abused backdancers!
Thanks a lot but no Thanks3 -It's Always Fair Weather- Moar Vamp!Sica abusing her boyz. :D (vamp here meaning "a seductive woman who uses her sensuality to exploit men") This and "Diamonds..." could also be alternative Sooyoung numbers.

Bosom buddies3 (Jeti) -Mame- With adjusted lyrics, of course, as long as the "somewhere between ___ and death line" is older than they actually are.

Tiffany: Also turned out pretty SRS BSNS. I just kept listening to these lyrics and going. "Wow, that's very Tiffany."
Some People2 -Gypsy-
I Enjoy Being a Girl2 -Flower Drum Song- Okay, I did NOT realize how relevant Flower Drum Song was. Wow, this is almost uncanny.
A New Town is a Blue Town*2 -The Pajama Game-
The Great Lady Has An Interview3  -Ziegfeld Follies- The humor here is so quirky, I'm not sure what they were originally were going for. Anyway, I wanted to give Tiffany a less SRS BSNS song to try, if not to see if she could ham like R believes she can. And she'd do great interacting with her backdancers.

I Won't Dance3 (Hyosoori) -Roberta- The first few "STOP!"s will involve the other two punching the one that started discretely popping, of course.
Cool1 (Dance 4 with SM boybands as backup, Seo singing Ice's part) -West Side Story- Gotta follow up the crack with some real moves. I can't find it anymore, but there used to be a video setting this routine to 90s music, proving that the choreography was timeless and not tied to the jazzy showtune style. That really struck a chord with me.

Seohyun: I feel like these selections are somewhat shallow without being particularly crack-ish. D:
In Between2 -Love Finds Andy Hardy- Boy is this a 2.
Think of the Time I Save*2&3 -The Pajama Game- She'll be carrying the fate fee jar with her and taking money from members entering the stage all throughout the number. Also, best breakfast ever.
Down With Love1 -Hooray for What!- Twill be a challenge for maknae to loosen up and sing this song with the swing it demands, but I have faith.
Thank Heaven for Little Girls3&4 -Gigi- The pedo song! :D Just kidding, Maurice Chevalier has always played players who go for older women.

Special Guest Appearance by Heechul  -Cabaret-
Must prepare for upcoming hawtness!

Yuri: Turned into almost all gamCyd. I really didn't mean for this to happen, Cyd is more like Gahee than Yuri.
Two-faced Woman1 -The Bandwagon- The staging from the video should be used as well. Mmm, shoulders.
All of You 3 -Silk Stockings- Cole Porter is the king of lyric innuendo. Can be either her singing this to us or someone serenading her, same difference to family-friendly Yuri!
Baby You Knock Me Out4 -It's Always Fair Weather- Indeed. Man, proper interactive use of backdancers is highly underrated.
I'll Capture Your Heart1&3 -Holiday Inn- Yuri doing this as a crazy solo would perfectly embody her image. Singing, dancing, schizo humor personality, and how trying to do it all might be hurting her popularity. XD Plus she'll be serenading like the pairing whore she is instead of seducing like in her other numbers.

Take Me or Leave Me3 (Taengsic) -Rent- Absolutely no lyric relevance lol, I just want to hear the SNSD belters belting it out with each other. :d

Sunny: Pretty much ended up me worshipping her voice, and then lots of crack. The first draft of this post included "Someday My Prince will Come" and "Part of Your World" from Disney.
I Wanna Be Loved By You -Three Little Words- OH GOD THE AEGYO GET IT AWAY
And I Love Him1 -The Beatles- Hey, that's not a musical song! Who cares, it's Julie Andrews making it so hauntingly beautiful and I want Sunny to do the same.
Just in Time4 (by uncle Lee Soo Man, lol) -Bells Are Ringing- Because clearly Sunny saved the SNSD lineup. CLEARLY. Bonus points if Sunny also sings Judy Holliday's parts in the second half. I'm thinking that the staging will be more along the extravagant lines of "Hello Dolly" -Hello Dolly- though, with the staircase and such.
Gotta Get a Gimmick2&3 -Gypsy- XDXDXD, just replace "stripping" with "idolling" and the lyrics are completely too relevant. D: Of course Sunny will do this one in a Bunny Girl getup. XD
Aisu Kuriimu to my Purin

Special Guest Appearance by the SM Board of Directors* -Cabaret-
Next act is Yoona, after all.

Yoona: Mostly guys telling her how pretty she is, which is nothing new. XD
Beautiful Girl4 -Singing In The Rain- And she's over sweet sixteen!
One2&4 -A Chorus Line-
Let Me Entertain You*2 -Gypsy- It's not like that dress is much more ridiculous than her wedding dresses. (And the lyrics make much more sense than "Like a Virgin")
Greased Lightning3 -Grease- Because you know you want to see Yoona with slicked-back hair, wearing a leather jacket, and doing her choding dancing with crotch-thrusts.  She was the one driving the pink car anyway!

Special Guest Appearance by The Media -The Music Man-
It is Yoona, after all.

All the Things You Are1 (TaeSunSeoSica) -A Very Warm For May- Is it just me, or are those pitch-shifts INSANE? This song has a gigantic range, at any rate. Definitely need to keep this arrangement with the choir and all, none of the other versions of this song that I've heard affect me near as much.

Time Warp3 (SMTown special) -Rocky Horror Picture Show- SUPA-cracked out idols! :D And sure, trade out the tap solo for a hip hop remix dance break.

Finale: No Business like Show Business2 (all) -Annie Get Your Gun-

Encore:
Anything You can Do3 (all) -Annie Get Your Gun- Pick your pairing for whatever match you deem appropriate (comments discussion? :P)

Smile1&2 (all) -Modern Times- I want them to specifically sing this arrangement. Of course Taeng first, then Jessica comes in on harmony, Sunny takes the second solo with Seohyun harmony.

------------------

Heh, I had a few more outlandish ones too like JYP singing "I Wanna Be a Producer", Lee Seunggi crooning "You Stepped Out of a Dream" to a parade of the other girlgroups, or Uee doing an Esther Williams number, but decided to keep it fairly SNSD/SM confined.
So agree? Disagree? Other Suggestions?
