Diggin the single, they get to show off their chops for once. Album is all over the place as usual with their Korea ones (would've thought they learned how to do it with the success of 1st Japanese)
MV: Congrats, SM, it's still a dance shot + closeup, but it's so pretty I don't care. Standard SM formula stuff.
Song: Snrrrrk it's like they took RDR, somehow made it even MORE laidback, and inserted rap? In terms of this low-key dance style, I think I prefer Kurumi to Dialogue. Incredibly underwhelming, especially when the rap bridge is way lower in energy than in similar songs like Hollaback Girl, Bang!, and freaking Beat Line wtf why is everything suddenly like Beat Line but inferior.
Dance: And just like RDR, the low-key nature of the song ruins any energy the choreography is trying to muster. This is the kind of song you stand around slinkily and sing, not the kind that requires nine girls doing formation work. Fucking song.
Nah dude, it's more like firing on all sylinders - you may claim it's a mess, but at least they're not standing still. Big notes aplenty, bringing out each member's vocals, not to mention Taeyeon and Jessica getting to do their thang all over the place.. highlight being the mental 'girls bring the boys out' x 4 thing near the end.
RDR leaned towards the slinky, this beat is more punctuated, more physical.
I don't know. Kurumi to Dialogue isn't exactly a song I favor that much, even though I don't dislike it either. It's not a mess, there's barely anything there! Mostly, I think I've been utterly ruined by how Gee and TMYW have excellent progression in their structure. My Boy just kind of sits back during the verse, builds during the pre-chorus, and then the bottom drops out of the chorus and we're back to laid back? Then the rap break really does nothing because all I can think are that it's so low-key compared to Hollaback Girl and Bang!. Every time that "bring the boys out" harmonic sample gets played it lowers the tension, even while they're trying to build to a climax after the rap break. Except that said climax never happens. This song just kind of wallows in circles, and it isn't helped by the fact that the KYHD-style intro to the song in the MV does get my hopes up.
I mean, once the initial "why is it so shrill" reaction goes away, Flying Get does a better job of progression than The Boys. The Boys isn't a bad song, but it's album track material, not single material. Freaking Teddy Riley and his ego

i love that most sones find the song underwhelming and everyone else is loving it.
i think it has the potential to be great on stage, but it's not a song i'll be overplaying at all, heh. it's what i expected from the whole america/teddy riley push so i don't care too much; off to riffle through the album.
lmao, well, sones are sones for a reason. idg people who hold concept expectations though because unless you're a yg stan (which, poor you if you are...) your group is going to end up with no real coherence in their concept trajectory and they're going to do everything under the sun and a lot of the time it's not going to work. but there's almost always something to enjoy, innit?
Yeah, but some expectations are inevitable when SM says things like "this will show a side of SNSD people have NEVER seen before!!!1!1" and "this is the most difficult dance routine SNSD has ever done!!1!," both of which are always lies.
I really like the album tracks! It's not as widely all over the place as the minis, and like Oh! the non-(obligatory)ballad album tracks do have a slight theme of electro-pop that are nonetheless less obviously retro because of darker arrangements than in Oh!. Textbook pop melodies that are textbook because they work. Lol at the bass line riff from Stand By Me in Say Yes.
How Great is Your Love is slightly more upbeat than the usual obligatory ballads, so it's not as knee-jerky dull. Still doesn't exactly go anywhere, though.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA MY J IS BAR NONE A JPOP TRACK WITH REALLY SHITTY PRODUCTION. Ooh, ooh, ooh, so many song comparisons right now, starting with After School's Lovex3, which was also a total Jpop track. Good gorram, even Tsunku doesn't write melodies this obvious for H!P, but there's some shitty AKB48 stage tracks out there like this, melodically at least. Ahahahahahaha dead ringer for Arashi's Wish ahahahahahaha

Noticed the same, proves that sones are mental.
