i would be a better skiier if i were a bat. try skiing in the alps: the ground is blue-white and the sky is gray-white. there are no trees. with diffuse light and no shadows and a monochrome world, it is impossible to determine the topography of the terrain right in front of you. is it steep? is it flat? even worse in a blizzard: then you are in a white box, identical to being in a darkened room, except you can see your body, and you're falling down the side of a mountain. hence: echolocation would be useful.
