Title: It's Nothing
Summary: AU. Mark and Ryan, a cold night, and a need for pencils.

(Background Notes--Mark is AU Hakkai; Ryan is AU Sanzo. This is the Hollow Men universe, a Saiyuki AU-type thingy. Started with my shortfic Over Again, and then was very kindly continued by runefallstar in the comments here, and with a set of drabbles here. You rock Rune! I'm sorry this is so late, and I hope you like it!)

It wasn't anything.

They'd had to go to the store for pencils of all things, because Mark resolutely refused to walk into the math final that next day armed with only a pen and a smile. But just because they went in for pencils didn't mean they didn't come back out with two bags for each hand, because Mark had said: oh maybe this, and oh maybe that, and eventually had taken over the basket completely (only giving it up when Ryan hid a twitching smile and tugged out his wallet).

The full and sharp force of winter wind made them shudder bone-deep even in their jackets, and then break into a run, the two of them pounding across the parking lot and bumping shoulders carelessly all the way to the car.

After a momentary confusion over who was supposed to be driving, they stuffed the bags into the backseats and stuffed themselves into the front, hunching shoulders and starting the motor and spreading their fingers in front of the heater vents. Warmth slowly billowed out toward them like a welcoming cloud while they almost laughed out loud at each other's breathlessness, or even something else, who knew.

"Thank you for coming all the way out here," Mark said in the suddenly serious way he did sometimes.

"It's not anything," Ryan said, turning away just in time before another stupid smile wobbled out of his mouth. He watched his breath shimmer and haze on the window before it slowly faded away and left Mark's reflection, dark and solid.

ETA: There seems to be a store theme whenever I try to write this universe... *laughs*
