“Hey, Youngwoon, isn’t it a nice night out?” A soft, calming voice came from Youngwoon’s left, and his lips pulled up into a lopsided smile as he turned to answer the other man.

“Yes, indeed it is Jungsoo hyung.”

They were a peculiar pair; anyone who knew them well would say that. It’s not surprising. Jungsoo and Youngwoon came from two different worlds. One worked at a prestigious company, earning a massive pay check on a monthly basis with an equally fat bonus at the end of the year, especially when he scores an enormous business deal, while the other toiled at a local garage, getting just enough cash in his pockets to pay off his bills and barely prevented himself from starving to death while doing so.

No one would have expected that they would meet, but they did.

It was at a bungee-jumping hobbyist’s club, one autumn ago. Jungsoo was trying the extreme sport out for the second time, while Youngwoon was a pro at it, doing part-time coaching jobs just to earn an extra income. It was under the most unlikely circumstances that they had actually started talking to each other.

One would say that bungee jumping was a sport for adrenaline junkies, or for people who wanted to seek some thrill in life. It was undeniable that the freefall would ignite some feelings in the person indulging in it; but as Jungsoo and Youngwoon had discovered, not everyone fell into one of these general categories.

There were some of them who - these people probably needed psychiatric help - immersed themselves in the sport to feel what it was like to die if they jumped off from a high-rise building. The sport provided them the leverage to reconsider their decisions, or perhaps to gain enough courage to take that first step and never look back.

Either way, it had ignited the unlikely relationship between Jungsoo and Youngwoon. Both were unabashed in admitting to why they did bungee-jumping, and were equally taken aback when the other came clean with their reasons. But it was definitely that bond which drew them together - the sense of being able to understand someone and be understood in return, without judging or be judged.

They were both depressed and unhappy with their lives, though neither showed it until one drunken night filled with tearful confessions, heated kisses, missing clothes, and sinful desires satiated. It was then that they knew they were fully dependent on the other just to get through another day. It didn’t even matter to them that their statuses were miles apart.

“Hey Youngwoon…” Jungsoo calls for his attention for the umpteenth time that night, pulling Youngwoon out of his recollections. Youngwoon hummed in response, enjoying the smoothing strokes of Jungsoo’s thumb on the back of his hand. It felt like second nature to him, just like-

“Do you want to experience how a freefall feels like, without safety harnesses in the way?” came Jungsoo’s question, with no warning whatsoever. The impact hits Youngwoon hard, interrupting his thoughts and his coherency.

The younger male whipped around and stares at Jungsoo, feeling shell-shocked by the sudden proposition. He frantically tries to find a trace of humour in Jungsoo’s intonation, or that cheeky grin he would so often receive whenever Jungsoo played a prank on him, only to discover that there was none. Jungsoo’s expressions were eerily calm and serene as he stared out at the skyscrapers that lit up the skies with their obnoxiously large amount of neon lights ahead of them and the bustling city life below their feet.

“Why?” Youngwoon found himself asking after a short moment’s consideration. He was taken aback by his own words; several months ago, he probably would have said ‘yes’ in a heartbeat. But not now. Not when he had finally found the person that knew him well and completed him like a perfect puzzle piece.

“I want to get away from all of this.” Jungsoo answers vaguely, the ghost of a smile playing on his lips, and ends his thoughts with a whisper. “I’m tired.”

Youngwoon’s hands balls up into fists by his side. “Tired of me? Tired of our relationship?”

“You know it’s never like that, Youngwoon!” The older male panics.

“Then what, hyung? What do you want to get away from? You wanted this, didn’t you?” Youngwoon presses on, frustrated at the thought that the other man was hiding something from him.

“It’s just-” Jungsoo starts, then he pauses to think, and finally heaves a sigh and averts his gaze away from Youngwoon. “I don’t know. I’m being stupid. I’m sorry.” He says, picking himself up from the precarious ledge they were seated on. Youngwoon eyes him cautiously, ready to reach out and pull the idiot back if he ever does anything drastic, but said nothing. He knew that Jungsoo needed some time to clear his mind, and his own edginess wasn’t going to help the condition.

Jungsoo surprises him by walking in the opposite direction, towards the stairwell which led to the roof. Youngwoon watches him some more, before following behind him as well. Even though he hadn’t been given the opportunity to express it, Youngwoon was fully prepared to abide by Jungsoo’s decisions. He didn’t think there would be a good enough reason for him to cling onto this life if the other man wasn’t around to live it with him.

Perhaps then, experiencing a freefall without safety harnesses wouldn’t be that bad of an idea at all.
