So, my midterm (due 11/5) is nearly done. I could have gotten out of today's assignment, too, if I'd wanted to. (It was to design a logo, but I've had one for a while from another class, which he liked.) The midterm is to sketch/draw/finalize the layout for our websites and put together a powerpoint showing them. The instructor asked me to do mine last week, so today I did that after going over my logo assignment. He spent most of the class sitting with me, going over layout options and then we put it in flash and figured out how it'd work best.

It's ok. I really don't have anything against it; it's nice enough. The instructor and I have some creative differences. Because I'm required to pick one small area of the industry now to work toward a career in, I have to orient my entire portfolio and the online/printable resume to that one niche. I'm not all that happy about this; I've spent three years learning art, animation, programming, general design, etc, and I don't see the point of now limiting my job options. Tailoring a resume or cover letter to a position, sure. But I'd rather put the best of what I can do up, even if it's from more than one potential area of employment.

The instructor feels that since I'll be tailoring it toward texturing 3D models, my site needs more color than it had before. Personally, I like black, white, red, charcoal, etc. Bright colors. But for this, I'd prefer to just stick with the black and red. So, my website is done in tan, muted brick red, and white. *sigh* It doesn't look bad. In and of itself, I like it. It just isn't very me.

I'm also not entirely thrilled with the layout. There's nothing wrong with it. It looks fine. Again, just on its own, I like it.

It's just all so boring. It looks like *every*other*portfolio*site*out*there*. I realize that there is now a standard for portfolio sites, but I still think it's boring. Nothing stands out. Nothing is unique.

I'd prefer my website reflect my personality a little more. This one doesn't. When I did this layout and brought it into Photoshop, I had a solid background color, my logo in black, black accent lines, and black text. He wanted to see a design in the backgound, so i blew up my logo and put it at about 20% opacity. Then I filled the display area's background with the darker color that gave the background. A site he'd sent me to look at did a different color background for each project, and I thought that since he wanted to see a lot of color on my site, that would do, so made a couple other color backgrounds for it, too. He came back to look, made a few changes, and then didn't like the color, so we changed it.

It's not very me. I'd rather put this amount of work into something I *don't* want to change. The idea is that this quarter we start sending out our resumes and submitting our portfolio sites. This isn't really the one I want to be sending out. Oh well.

Like I said, it's ok on its own. Just boring.
