Several more weekends during June were spent continuing the construction fo our new fence. The goal was to replace all 260 feet of 40-year-old chain link fence plus two side gates with wood pickets held up by 2x4's supported by leaving the original metal poles in the ground. We decided to do it on our own (With help from Bryan making a couple trips out to do some solid work) since hiring a company would have been $15,000-$20,000. Since we had neighbors to keep happy, we tried to stay on a schedule and not leave any large gaps for too long. We learned a lot and got some good exercise in the sun! Overall, it went very well, actually! The neighbors seem to be pleased and now Nicole and I have the privacy we always wanted from this property. We sold off all the old fencing for a pittance on Craigslist which was great. It was quite a sight to see the old fence leave all rolled up and stacked. In fact, it's a crazy kind of therapy every time we finish a project on this house and see the garbage get hauled away. The metamorphosis continues! The fence isn't totally done however. We want to add a top-cap 2x4 but it's not such a priority rush as the rest of the fence was. It's really starting to feel like a home.
Also in May, I got the COVID vaccine! Both doses didn't seem to phase me all that much. I have a few coworkers who really were floored for days after the second shot. But it's done and deep down it's a comfort and a relief to have that protection from getting the disease. It's entirely possible and statistically likely that I'd have survived a real infection just fine but the risk of being wrong on that outweighed the risk of something negative happening from a brand new kind of vaccine. Now hopefully the world will truly get back to normal quickly and we can all put this strange year behind us. My workplace will be recalling my team from telecommuting in mid-July, so everything really is starting to open up.
Speaking of coworkers, it's been weird times at work for me lately. Three of my immediate coworkers (Including one I've been working with for the last seven years) are leaving the team and moving on to new opportunities elsewhere. It's a huge blow because it's unexpected and we're in the middle of needing as much help as possible to finish up the product we've been working on for over a year. It's always awkward to have to say goodbye to coworkers and especially weird to do it via telecommuting. I'm not sure what's going to happen with the dynamic starting tomorrow but hopefully things will smooth out and get better. How is it already June...
