Rhythm games have been around for decades but over the last ten years, the peripheral-based guitar simulators like
Rock Band and
Guitar Hero have rules the streets and been quite a time-sink for my friends and family. I remember countless tunes being strung out when I first got to play the very first Guitar Hero way back in 2005. Since then, the intrigue has faded but the nostalgia remains. Now, here in 2015, a new Rock Band game is coming out for the newer videro game consoles and it's refreshing those old desires to get a band together and rock out. In fact, my buddy, Bryan, has already invested in an entire kit of plastic drums and guitar controllers. For a few weeks now, every Friday, we've been meeting to jam out for the afternoon. Nicole and I have even been collecting all the old rhythm games we can find including karaoke titles for the Playstation 3. It's getting crazy just how many we have now.
The band does indeed feel back together. We're going to soon take it to another level though. We've been invited by some other friends to begin streaming our "Band Practices" live over the Internet as part of a new podcast enterprise. It could be fun. We've already got the camera and Bryan has some crazy ideas about strapping a GoPro action camera to the stalk of a guitar controller. Could we be the next YouTube sensation? Probably not; but it would be fun. We certainly have quite the collection of games and it would be fun to go through them. I just wish we had a bigger place...
Ian, one of my old college roommates, was in town visiting from Boise a couple weeks back. It was kind of a surprise and so we weren't truly prepared, but it was nice to have a visitor. We spent a chunk of time at a game night with our mutual college buddies, Matt and Cassandra, before he spent the night on our couch. The next morning, he was off to visit his favorite haunts around town before getting back on the road to Boise. I guess it was a short trip; just a couple days. But the distraction was fun and it was wild to have the gang back together again.
My sister, Val's, wedding is only 8 days away on Halloween night! It's been a weird road to get here though. A few weeks ago, her and fiancé Chris were in a spat, Val called off the wedding, and she ran away to the coast for a couple days to cool off. Unfortunately, disaster struck as she locked her keys and cell phone charger in her car and was literally stranded out there. With no other choice, she called Chris to drive all the way out to the Oregon coast to help. Thankfully, I guess it turned out to pay off as they smoothed things over and got the wedding back on track. Whew! What an adventure. That was a close one.
It'll be a Halloween wedding, so how can you not have costumed guests? Bryan'll be at the wedding too (We've all known each other for decades) and him and I will have matching costumes. We're going as characters from Minecraft. The deal is that we'll still wear formal suits and all, but on our heads will go cardboard boxes with the Minecraft character's faces. I'll also have a prop Minecraft sword. It's going to be a riot. I guess you could even call this a bit of public cosplay which will be crazy. I can't wait to see the photos!
