It's been about three weeks since my grandfather's funeral in Fargo, North Dakota, but it still feels like I'm readjusting back to being home. Things have been quiet and normal and after all that time off and all the pay I lost out on, it's nice to have a full week of work and a fat paycheck again for the first time since December.
I guess the only big news of the moment is that I asked for a raise at my job. For months, I've been performing rather well and most recently, I've had a string of wonderful personal successes where I fixed issues on products on the shop floor that had engineers and other techs puzzled. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The best part of my job is the high I get when I fix something that people paid triple what I am couldn't figure out. For some time now, I've been asking my immediate boss when they'll be able to hire me in. We're almost coming up on my first full year and they've put so much time and effort into me that it's time for them to show up or get off the pot. To that end, I did ask for a raise earlier this week and my boss was very receptive. It helped that on our way to discuss it, we ran into an engineer who stopped us to ask me how I solved a recent issue. It was awesome to have that happen in front of my boss. I'm confident they know I'm important. Once again, I'm in a job where I've become nearly indispensable.
Now we wait and see how much they offer me...
In other news, I've finally purchased the plane tickets and hotel rooms for my brother, Ryan's, wedding in Ohio in April. We've been dragging our feet on this for months because everyone has different plans and it was tough making sure everyone was on board. Finally, it's all settled and now we can relax for the next couple months. We got a great deal on everything too. $350 for round trip airfare, $33/day for the car rental, and $70/night for the hotel. Altogether, everyone's share is only going to be something like $500 for the entire trip. That should be a good time.
