No Visitors / Sleepless in Houston? / Garhan's Wedding Approaches

Apr 25, 2007 23:31

Tuesday was my grandfather's funeral in America's deep south. I heard it was very touching and beautiful as he was given a full military burial with a 21-gun salute and taps. In my last entry, I mentioned how my newly-widowed grandmother was coming back with my father from Alabama and how it was throwing everyone off. My parents began fighting over the phone about this and I worried about their marriage. But a whole new battle was raging that I never anticipated. It appears that my father and his relatives can't get along. I don't know the whole story, but I guess everyone fought the whole time. Finally, my dad called the visit off and agreed to postpone my grandmother's trip until much later this year. Wow. As you'd expect, everyone here in Oregon is very relieved.

But it gets better. My dad was supposed to fly home today but a very severe weather system rolling through Texas cancelled his original flight. He continually got bumped until he finally got a red-eye flight to Houston. When he got there, no flight to Portland was leaving until 9 AM Thursday so he's spending the night in the airport. To everyone's surprise, he's not very mad about it. He called here and told me that he's just glad to be taking a break from the family. I guess the whole funeral trip was too much for them. I can hardly imagine how awkward it must have been and what a relief it'll be to be home in Oregon and get a good night's sleep in a calm environment. I think I speak for everyone when I say that, sometimes, there's only so much of our family anyone can stand. In the morning, I'm off to the airport to grab him up. He'll probably sleep all day.

Garhan, one of best college friends and also my roommate from Freshman year (He was the first person I met on campus) is getting married May 12th right here in Hillsboro, Oregon! Him and his bride, Torri, live in Nebraska while Garhan's family lives in eastern Oregon. But they're having the wedding here in Hillsboro because this is where Torri's family lives. In fact, they live less than a mile from me. Small world! Anyway, I've been asked to DJ the event. I'm rather scared as I've never been to a wedding let alone provided the music for one. Garhan has tried to reassure me that there's nothing to it but I won't relax until it's over. It'll be a great miniature reunion of a couple EOU buddies. It'll be a riot since this will join together even more of my college friends into one family. Torri is Matt's cousin (I think). With Matt married to Cassandra, Garhan marrying Torri would make them all in-laws. Seven years ago when college started and they all were just meeting, no one would believe you if you told them that one day, they'd all be related. Now when I mention it, they all look at each other, shake their heads in disbelief and smile.

Life is good, guys. Life is good.
