Yesterday morning I received a call from a manager at
KTVZ, the NBC broadcast affiliate in
Bend, Oregon. They got my résumé and immediately called me. I wasn't expecting them to call let alone call so soon after me mailing my application out. They must have liked what they saw.
Him and I were on the phone for around 10 minutes. It was a very strange call in that he seemed to be selling the job to me rather than me selling my abilities to him. He almost sounded relieved that I had come along. It seemed to me he feels that Bend is a hard place to attract talent to. I guess they've had this position open for two months and no one has landed it.
The job is specifically called "On Air Technician" and the exact job listing is
at this link. Basically, I'd be a lackey of sorts. It's one step above getting coffee for the staff but one step below doing anything meaningful or artistic. But everyone has to start somewhere! I'm very excited about it. I have an interview on Tuesday.
However. There's a catch. And it's a big one.
KTVZ's parent company is in the process of acquiring
KFXO, the local Fox affiliate. If that happens and I get the job with KTVZ, it would make me an employee of a television station affiliated with Fox and therefore ineligible to participate in Steven Spielberg's upcoming reality TV show,
On the Lot. As you are all aware, I was in the process of beginning work on my submission video but now I'm dead in my tracks. I've got huge decisions to make. If I want to be in the On the Lot show, I've got to forget about KTVZ and a job I'm really looking forward to. So I've got to choose between being realistic by beginning my career in television or following a dream with the chance of possibly landing a big break on a TV show but remaining unemployed and putting it all on the line.
I'll know more after my interview on Tuesday. I'm pretty sure that by the time I walk out, I'll know whether I'd rather work for them or try out for On the Lot. So for now, I wait.
