I know
I said earlier that I wasn't gonna get one of these
professional camcorders, but my folks talked to me about it a few nights ago and said I should probably get it since I can afford it and it should further my career (Or lack thereof). So, I've been silently sniffing eBay for weeks looking... Waiting... Abiding my sweet time...
Until about an hour ago, I found
an auction for an XL-1. The XL-1 is a 7 year old model digital camcorder from Canon. Not quite as feature-packed as the XL-2 obviously but still good enough for real movies.
I jumped on it. I now own an $1,800 camcorder capable of quality on par with major motion pictures. This marks a quantum leap in my personal drive to make films as a hobby and potential full time lifestyle. Do I think I'll break into the industry? It's not likely but maybe I need to change my idea of what "The Industry" is. Hollywood is a small city a thousand miles south of here. Portland has a budding film scene, maybe there's room here. Who knows. But as any artist would tell you, making art is one thing but getting paid for it is the trick.
The camera I got has a little history, as you can read from the auction text (If you care). To paraphrase, it's been used for a documentary and a few Christian Rock music videos. Interesting. I've never paid so much for something over the Internet, I hope the money makes it... My bank will probably call in the morning wondering what the hell is going on. Hehehe What fun.
