I finished Mercy Kill.
I was a bit disappointed in that, while the book promised a return of the Wraiths, it didn't make it clear that it would mostly be new Wraiths. Not that there weren't any old ones, but... ah well. I suppose it makes sense, since it's set so many years after the last one. I liked the new Wraiths well enough. There was not nearly enough starfighter action, though. I realize that Wraith Squadron actually became an intelligence unit, with more focus on being commandos and infiltration and stuff, but still. X-Wing! It's called the X-Wing Series for a reason! :P
The pacing was a little off, I felt, and the reader is kept in the dark for much of the story with a huge after-the-fact explanation dump at the end, so I wish it had been more balanced. That being said, I did still enjoy it fairly well, and I enjoy the new characters and the hijinks they get up to. I just don't feel attached to them the way I did to the old Wraiths (and Rogues). I'm sure if there was another novel with them, I'd probably go for it, and honestly that might be a good thing. The earlier parts of the series gave us multiple books with which to learn and get hooked by the members, and this was only one. Maybe I'd feel differently after a couple more.
