And now for something completely different!
I don't think this is my best work, but...It surprised me with the mood it picked for itself. I just hope it doesn't seem too rushed and makes sense?
Envious
“Do you love him?”
Chloe had been surprised that he‘d been able to coax Waspinator out of the security office, especially after their little trip to the bar. But…the offer of breakfast food had apparently been enough to entice him out of the office and into the IHOP and Chloe couldn’t resist an opportunity to grill him in that casual, questioning way he always spoke when he was around the bugs.
The robot-turned-human had considered Chloe’s question often enough that it didn’t startle him and, for once, he didn’t blush. Instead, he chewed thoughtfully on the bite of pancake and strawberry syrup he’d been working on, carefully considering his answer. He didn’t want to say something that would get him flustered; this outing actually had been going fairly well.
Swallowing, he lifted his head to look at Chloe, violet eyes meeting piercing blue. “No.” He said softly, already waiting for the follow up question.
“No?” Chloe arched one finely trimmed brow, looking at the smaller man critically.
“No.” Waspinator repeated firmly. He knew Chloe wouldn’t believe him. But he was sure of his answer, no matter what the blond had to say about it.
Chloe regarded him for another long moment, leaning back in the booth and sipping at his tea. He himself was thinking, wondering at the reasons Waspinator would deny the obvious attraction. He had been fairly certain that the little bug was infatuated with his testy partner, and that that was why he put up with Inferno’s shit.
This changed everything.
“Then why do you let him push you around…?” He finally asked, “He treats you horribly. If you don’t love him, why do you put up with his shit?”
Waspinator ran a hand through his hair, again trying to carefully consider his words. “Humanz not understand.” He buzzed a little, struggling to come up with an explanation Chloe would be able to comprehend, “No matter how mean he izz…Inferno would alwayz, ALWAYZ protect Wazpinator from being scrapped.”
Chloe blinked, clearly intrigued by Waspinator’s confidence in the matter. “How can you be so certain?”
“Becauze,” Waspinator popped another syrupy piece of pancake in his mouth, expression softening as he thought about it, “Antz are social…Inferno needz to be around otherz like him. Wazpinator iz only one left…” He smiled a secret little smile, looking down at the remains of his food, “And even if Inferno not know it…Flierz stick together. Wazpinator knowz Inferno can’t leave him alone any more than Wazpinator can leave Inferno alone. Don’t need love…Iz enough to have trust; to know where Wazpinator standz.”
Again, the aristocratic blond simply looked at Waspinator, searching for some shadow of doubt; something that would tell him the Predacon wasn’t really quite as certain as he was about this. But no…The green-haired man looked so serene and accepting; so at peace with the fact that he knew he received no love in return for that which he gave.
It wasn’t fair. Their situations were similar enough; why was Waspinator so able to accept it? Chloe hated that Schuldich would never return his feelings; so why…? The blond quietly drank his tea as Waspinator finished his pancakes, humming to himself as if he hadn’t a care in the world.
It just wasn’t fair.
