movie reviews!

Dec 17, 2005 15:43

here's my very brief review of every movie we got from netflix this year. the list is a little bit spare, b/c we only joined in July.

Karl Rove: The Architect (Frontline) - frontline shits on network journalism. this was pretty good.
Kickboxer - it was ok. enjoyably vapid martial arts film.
Profit: Season 1 - the best show ever on television. love the mid-90s gear. god damn you fox for cancelling it!
Persona - i must have been sleepwalking when i added this to the queue. it was crap.
The Fog of War - fabulous. never pass up an opportunity to hear robert macnamara talk about anything.
Cool Hand Luke - eh, not as good as i remembered it.
Dangerous Liaisons - good as always.
City of God - surprised me by being completely awesome. the cover makes it look like a teenage love story or something. this is probably the best movie i saw all year.
The Passion of the Christ - i guess it's not an entirely bad film. Mary's acting poos all over it for me, though.
McLibel - very good.
Permanent Midnight - better than i expected. i love a sassy drug addict.
Doctor Who: The Dalek Invasion of Earth - fucking horrible. my husband is retarded for liking this show.
P.D. James (i got all of them this year) - they were ok. i can't remember which was which now. they were all a bit too tidy.
Last Life in the Universe - great. love inventive plots like that.
Beverly Hills 90210: The Pilot Episode - 2 hours of utter bliss. SO GOOD
The Office: Season 1 - this is the american version. it was good, not as good as the original of course. i'm looking forward to season 2.
The Long Good Friday - it was ok. i didn't know bob hoskins is english. sexy in a gnomish way, too.
Get Carter (1971) - i watched about 10 minutes of it. i couldn't keep looking at the awful dental hygiene.
Rat Race - funny.
Guns N' Roses: Sex n' Drugs n' Rock n' Roll - SHIT. so disappointing, but i guess par for unauthorized music docos.
Sons of Katie Elder - it was good, believe it or not. i liked it.
Curb Your Enthusiasm: Season 4 - love it. can't wait for the next season.
Michael Moore's The Awful Truth: both seasons - i got really sick of him after the first few shows.
The Big One - i am so with michael moore on this issue! it was ok.
Napoleon Dynamite - much better than i expected.
The Corporation - very good. i'm keen to read the book.
Spellbound - yikes. that spastic ADHD kid was hilarious. i love the robot voice thing.
Girl with a Pearl Earring - good, but i couldn't wait for it to be over.
Breaker Morant - wow, talk about a film i didn't expect to like. i loved it! wrenching!
DiG! - excellent. really liked it. my husband is getting it for christmas.
Chappelle's Show: Season 1 - some of it was funny, but a lot of it was really shitty and unfunny.
Vera Drake - hated it. hollywood slop.
Daria: The Movie - i used to love daria. what happened? i couldn't even finish watching this. too blah.
Sandbaggers: all 3 collections - truly excellent! although my first observation was "typical underproduced english shit," it grew on me.
Frida - yeah, i wouldn't watch this one again.
Million Dollar Baby - my kickboxing instructor wouldn't shut up about how great this movie is, but i found it only ok. a bit hollywood-y
Saved! - i know i liked this movie, but i can't remember much about it.
Pretty Baby - weird, icky movie. way too much adolescent brooke shields semi-nudity.
Dancing at the Blue Iguana - darryl hannah plays such a good space cadet. this movie was boring though. "strippers have dreams too.." oh ffs, can it.
Kinsey - it was ok. loved that dinner table conversation about holding back the labia for comfortable penetration.
The League of Gentlemen: Series 2 & 3 and the christmas special - pissed myself laughing. we could only get season 1 on dvd here until this year, so i've been waiting for this a long fucking time. i loved it. will be buying it so i can watch it ad nauseum.
Idiot Box - pretty good! australian films are such gems. well, all except the dish, which was a shitter.
Bloodsport - ah, the old standby. very enjoyable. good villain. excellent grotesquery.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - too boring to watch. i put it back in the envelope after the first hour.
Team America: World Police - it was funny.
The Woodsman - my asshole husband watched this and sent it back while i was out of town, so i never got to see it.
Dogtown and Z-Boys - great! we got this instead of going to see the hollywooded up version. it was pretty amazing watching the footage of these guys way back in the day when they first entered competitions. impressive.
