Sherlock (+BC), Agatha Christie, and Hiddles

Mar 28, 2012 13:43

I was thinking that maybe I should go watch the second season of Sherlock after all. Then I thought of Irene Adler, and how the ACD character whom I admired got twisted into...this. (Oh, and this.)

Yeah. Maybe not.

Anyway. I finished reading The Hitman's Guide to House Cleaning by Hallgrímur Helgason because the Kindle edition was on a one-day sale. (It was the first Kindle Book of the Day I've bought in these past three months.) It was a nice read, with an odd mixture of religion and war and sex and other stuff, yet never really gets morose. I'm not sure I'd recommend buying it at full price, but it's a pleasant read if you can borrow it from a library.

I've also been trying to get into Agatha Christie novels. I read Murder on the Orient Express a while back and thought it was a nice setup. Couldn't really get into The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and Destination Unknown was plain depressing even though I finished it (somehow) in the end. Going through Murder is Easy right now and it's easy enough. If anybody have recommendations from her long book list, I shall be very grateful.

BUT WAIT WHAT IS THIS!

An adaptation, with the inclusion of Miss Marple (played by Julia McKenzie), was included in the fourth season of Marple; it deviated significantly from the novel by removing, adding, and changing characters, adding subplots, and changing the murderer's motives. It's Miss Marple who meets Miss Pinkerton on the train and learns of her suspicions about the village deaths. Pinkerton is killed in a fall down a London station escalator while enroute to Scotland Yard. Miss Marple meets 30-ish police detective Luke Fitzwilliam (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) in the village, where he is dealing with a deceased relative's property, and they recognize one another's investigative inclinations and work together to solve the murders.
