Today fucking sucked.
First, I called my case worker for my EBT card (food stamps), since I got my car last week but there's no money on it and thus useless. He basically forgot to finish filing my paperwork and had left it untouched. He told me he'd call me by 2 pm today. At 4:50 I called him and left a voice mail because he's gone for the day. Fucking useless.
Then we had the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Food Bank, since they just finished renovating the building. This only meant for me that I had to dress up, I had to be all smiley all day, and sit through a 'bbq lunch' where I could eat nothing but beans and salad. The only bread that was out was garlic bread, and when I asked the woman in charge of the food if there was any bread NOT already covered in butter, she snapped at me. I'm SOOOOO SORRY that my veganism is such a fucking inconvenience to you. It was a simple question, you bitch.
Then I had to go to Casa de Alfarero, a church here in Watsonville that is the largest site for our Food for Children distributions, with 300 families served - many of which live in the dried up riverbank across the street from the church. I was there to do demographics, which involves getting everyone to fill out a form with things like children's ages and annual income - something the food bank has to do once a year in order to keep our funding. It takes longer than you might think, considering that those who can read or write at all average a 3rd grade reading level. My supervisor was supposed to do this site, since it's the church that she attends and her husband is the pastor there. But she had a meeting to go to, so she sent me and the other Americorps (who doesn't speak Spanish).
It started out well enough, but one of the volunteers who normally helps with the distribution freaked out that we were there, and managed to convince all the other volunteers to not help us. I tried to explain to him that we weren't there to take his job or to check up on him, but he could not be convinced. He was rude and frustrating enough to make me cry, especially because while I speak pretty good Spanish, I couldn't articulate well enough what I wanted to say. Teresa eventually showed up and smoothed things over, and chastised the guy for treating me that way. Nevertheless, it ruined my afternoon.
Ugh. Here's to hoping that tomorrow is better.
