The colours are as dull as the colours of Finnish nature, basically, never rising above it. That's the sad thing. It's all very sort of rusty and light and bland and bleak, so anything more colourful feels like such a splash of life in comparison.

There is a direct correlation between this aesthetic starvation and the level to which people seek out beautiful things and ecstatic experiences, I think. I mean, I don't even *think* that, it's just so obvious. Why would there be such a disproportionately huge amount of hippies from Finland going out to India to seek that sort of thing? And why is the operatic romanticism of metal so big in Finland? Why is it that Finland is the only country in Northern Europe with enough devotees yearning for Amma's hug? It's as if the entire culture just suffocates that basic human need for *vibrancy* and colour and emotion and anything that goes beyond that dull bleakness, basically. Sometimes it honestly feels like you're living in some sort of deprivation chamber here, something that's been sterilised of all beauty, as if even a little curlicue or a splash of colour was some allergen.

So I don't honestly think that the people who moan about people like us being somehow robbers get it entirely--it's like scolding a starving thief for stealing the tiniest biscuit from the table of a culture that is, to us, a banquet.
