What’s the most depressing movie you’ve ever watched?
Plenty of John Simm things. Not going to do that again. I really wish I hadn't watch some of them, Sex Traffic in particular. How was I that stupid? I already knew of all those horrors anyway but to have extra graphic visuals just added to my misogyny PTSD's wank bank. Never again.
What’s the most disturbing movie you’ve ever watched?
See above.
An actor/actress you’ve seen in more than 8 movies? Name the movies.
I'll try and not go for the obvious Connie thing, but let's say Bonita Granville:
1. Escape (the only good bits are with Connie and her)
2. The Beloved Brat (LauRA ERIKA BARRING ON THE RUN)
3. White Banners (eeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, so heartwarming)
5. Suspense (crap)
6. These Three (holy SHIT)
7. All the Nancy Drews (so lovely and bouncy and bubbly and wonderful omg)
8. Breakfast in Hollywood (not particularly exciting but she's cute)
And many more. Mostly crap after she turns twenty, though.
A film you could watch on repeat for the rest of your life?
I'll just echo my dear colleague's answer here:
"A Woman's Face. And it'd probably still manage to surprise me with new stuff every time (though Torsten whoring at me on repeat for the rest of my life would likely drive me and my pussy to incurable insanity (and I'd relish every sordid second of it))."
What’s the very first film you remember watching?
Gosh. I remember being traumatised by the Angelique ones on telly when I was little. I have no idea why my mum allowed me to watch something with so much sex and violence. But of course, that instilled a lifelong love of the 17th century and various romantic elements in me...
A film you wish you hadn’t watched?
So many of those brutal Simmy things.
A film you wish had a sequel?
Well, only if it was the rare occasion of a sequel that's not shit. Can I have a sequel to Escape that's not crap and is all about Kurt and Ursula fucking?
Which book would you like to see adapted into a film?
All the books I love tend to intoxicate me with their beautiful language and intelligence, and that's so hard to translate onto film.
The most aesthetically pleasing movie you’ve ever watched?
Fnrrggghghghgh. The Thief of Bagdad, Thor, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Fountain, The Fall, The Student of Prague. And I'm sure there are plenty of costume-porny ones I'm forgetting now. Prague isn't actually *that* different from any costume pic but most of the aesthetic pleasure comes from watching Connie. How was he that beautiful? HOW? Oh, and I know it isn't a movie, but The Devil's Whore was so luscious the way they'd fiddled with the colours in post-production to make it look like a Baroque painting, so I have to mention that.
What’s your favourite movie director?
I probably would've said "Tim Burton" many years ago, but I'm starting to get tired of all the restless craziness (since I loved only the goth shit anyway). It's hard to think of a single one, because there are plenty who always please me aesthetically--Cukor, Powell, Aaronofsky, Tarsem, Branagh... blernghrrght. I can't decide on a single one.
Your favourite movie genre?
Historical (preferably of the blood and boobs sort rather than the ladies-in-bonnets-sipping-tea-and-bitching sort), fantasy, Gothic horror.
A movie that holds a special place in your heart?
So many! But of course, The Thief of Bagdad has probably inspired me to write the most fic ever, so I guess I'll go with that.
Your favourite comedy film?
Does The Princess Bride count as comedy? It's so tongue-in-cheek all throughout? If not, then Life of Brian and Holy Grail, I guess.
A music video you would love to see developed into a film?
Well, I mentioned Tarsem earlier and that... well, his movies are like extended music videos. The really good ones I like are like movies unto themselves and would probably be not as great if they were stuffed full of other stuff? And... is it cheating if I really wanted a version of POTO with Crawford/Brightman and not just those measly crumbs we got in music video form? *sob* It's one of those things I really wish I could go back and see if I had a TARDIS.
A film everyone loves but you hate?
Why in the fuck was The Avengers so popular? So much of it was just fucking explosions to jack off the teenaged guy audience. And Joss, while he is good at snarky one-liners, has always got on my nerves and I find him the most overrated screenwriter in recent history. Never seen a thing of his I've liked. Ever. And that's definitely something people would burn me at the stake for. I'm just absolutely resistant to that guy, sorry.
A film you love but everyone else hates?
I often seem to like the types of things that aforementioned fanboy audience hates because they're watching it for totally different things? I can't think of a film that's violently hated, but Who-wise, I'll defend The Time Monster unto death because of the fantastic character stuff, lols and boobs and daisiest daisies. Fanboys fucking hate it because of the crappy science and the plot not making much sense, but that's NOT THE FUCKING POINT. I can't believe how gender-divided that opinion is. Even the fucking DVD extras were just fanboys slagging it off and I want to make a fangirl one that's all about squeeing.
Which cinematic universe would you like to live in?
The version of Asgard in Thor? I guess? The whole dark elf bullshit does not exist in my head because it was so rubbish, so I'm just ignoring that part. And then I'd turn myself into a sexy, sexy horse.
What’s your favourite biopic?
Fnrrggldfhfahdbrdrg. I'm trying to think of one and failing. And I bet I'll remember one I like as soon as I post this. Does La Reine Margot even count, since it's such a romanticised version and covers only a few months? And speaking of romanticised biopics, WHEN IS SOMEONE GOING TO DIG OUT THAT THING WITH CONNIE AS PAGANINI?
Mainstream movies or indie movies?
Somewhere in between. Most indie stuff is so depressing that I have zero interest in it; life is bleak enough as it is. And my favourites tend to be the slightly different, quirkier types of mainstream-ish films that might not have made tons of money. Or the odd ones that have made a lot of money despite being different.
Old movies or contemporary movies?
Fuckin' guess.
A film with an amazing soundtrack?
I've had the fucking ToB soundtrack in my head on repeat since Christmas. But I'm going to say EVERYTHING CLINT MANSELL HAS EVER DONE *windmills arms* but The Fountain, especially. Everything Kilar's ever done. Elfman's score for Edward Scissorhands is magical. And Debbie Wiseman is a hugely, HUGELY underrated composer more people should be getting into. She's probably the most Romantic composer working today, invoking such deep waves of emotions that it hurts my heart. Even when I was watching that Joanna Lumley series where she travelled along the Nile, I got *shivers* of pleasure from the music and tears filled my eyes and I went "Oh. So that was Debbie again." Ok, sod it, I've just upped the title music for He Knew He Was Right
here so you can listen for yourselves. Absolutely heartbreaking and yet so beautiful, all condensed into one minute. Hated the series and wanted to punch everyone in it, but oh my god, the MUSIC.
