I am drunk and I just received a bootleg DVD of Bella Donna today and watched it and omg but how was this guy the answer to a subby woman's prayers

How

I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE RACIST SHEIK SHIT OKAY HE WAS JUST TOO FUCKING MUCH AND I AM LEGITIMATELY TRYING NOT TO CRY

It was a far better movie than what the reviews would have you think. Basically, if a woman seeks sexual fullfillment beyond stiff-upper-lip frigid dudes and goes for a perv, he turns out to be a douchebag and it's basically a no-win situation. It's depressing in its way because it's kind of true even today. But those reviewers were clearly not sexually frustrated women, because I totally could feel for the female character and Mary Ellis was sympathetic and quite a hot femme fatale, seriously.

And one day I will write an entire fucking essay about how in the olden days and even today, the guys who were the Other represented sexual freedom and desire and fantasy for women trapped in the patriarchy. Connie always played those kinds of guys--either the "faggy" femme guys (cf. the guys of slash fiction today) or the Exotic Foreigners (TM) or tempting enemies or guys who were the Other in various types of ways. No wonder he had such crazy sex appeal because his roles were so often outside of the norm. It's really very sad how this shit has crazy resonance even today, because we're surrounded by so much sexist bullcrap. And the catlike Other is *always* hotter than the emotionally crippled guy the patriarchy wants to turn all men into. I am so glad the alternative always existed in fiction, but it certainly needs to happen more IRL.

But, Connie. HOW. He is so overly sexual in so many early sound movies it's ridiculous. Nobody is that pervy IRL all the time anyway! What the fuck was he smoking? I mean, not that I am complaining, but it's actually hard to watch sometimes because it seems OTT, even when it's not meant to be, because it's just so... ok, OTT isn't the right term, but "overwhelming" is. That way he leaps and slinks and leers! It's... it's ridiculous! And yet utterly disarming. I am actually trying not to sob for real because HOW?!? HOW WAS THIS GUY REAL?

No, fuckit. Tearing up. BECAUSE HE DID NOT EXIST.
