Not *all* British shows are good and even the writer on this one is a bit overrated, I think--but yeah.
I had to watch it with subs because the accents got a bit thick at times. But in the scene where we thought the boy was in trouble for wanking and John (that's John's character's name--easy enough to remember *g*) was pissed off at him--the subs tell me it's because he thought the kid was off picking rocks for the neighbour guy. The one we saw him picking rocks for earlier and who gave the kid a coin and also paid John's bar bill. The neighbour seems like a decent guy, but John's character is so angsty and fucked up and so desperate that he gets upset when he thinks his kids are "betraying" him for someone else. I listened to a radio interview the other day where John said his character is messed up because he tries to run the farm with just his family but it's too big and he would need more people to work the fields. So he is extra anxious when he doesn't get enough help from his sons.
John always seems to play the kinds of characters who are wankers and who you want to punch but who you still feel some sympathy for. I first saw him in the Lakes in the Nineties (yes, I'm that old, I watched it when it was on) and remember thinking "the characters in this are arseholes, but why am I still watching? This show is too well-written, dammit"!
