Purely hypothetical Devil's Whore question

This is by no means for a Sexby/Rainsborough fic nor am I attempting to write one, nope. This is puuuurely hypothetical. I am struggling with characters' names here. Most of the time these guys are called by their surnames, but then Rainsborough was a bleeding hippie and probably would've encouraged first-name-basis type things (I may have read this somewhere, but I'm not sure). I'm just wondering what they'd call each other, especially if I wrote them doing something emotionally intimate (not even shagging, but Moments of Emotional Turmoil). Sexby always gets called Sexby, and that's probably easiest, but would he be familiar enough with Rainsborough to call him Thomas (even in his head, after Rainsborough is dead)? On one hand, Sexby is emotionally crippled and withered and everything, and yet he has this aching soft spot for Rainsborough, so would that be plausible?

Basically, I'm leaning towards "mostly surnames, but very emotional scenes might slip into first names". And no, Rainsborough will *not* be calling Sexby "Ned" at any point, no matter how historically accurate that'd be...

P.S. What's this thing I keep hearing about man-on-man love being rampant in the New Model Army, or is this some wishful thinking on some flashy scholar's part? Not that war doesn't enable manlove anyhow, but...
