Holy crap

Okay. They really, really need to translate more Johanna Sinisalo into English. I've just been going through an anthology of her short stories and her stuff is quite breathtaking. She tends to bend reality with a Gaiman-level skill sometimes. Except her stuff tends to be much darker and grittier and the minus side is that it's hard to find a story of hers where a woman *doesn't* get abused somehow, but she's still quite an amazing SF writer. I... the last story in the anthology made it perfectly plausible that Mary Magdalene was an African voodoo priestess who taught Jesus all he knew and then made him come back to life with her ointments. So, basically, we got zombie Jesus. And it actually fucking worked. It was a perfectly serious and creepy story and it worked. That's kind of what I mean by the Gaiman-level skill. O_O

It's really sad that we've got a bloody amazing SF writer here who hasn't had much of her stuff translated into English. If you can find any of her stuff in English, do grab it. It's usually worth it.

ETA: OH! OH! OH! My all-time favourite story of hers, Bear's Bride, has been translated! I'm definitely recommending that one.
