Five things meeeeme

lonemagpie asked me about these. And I apologise if I sound lame if I bring in stereotypes to do with... whatever. It's hard to discuss some things without them, though, even though I'm not very keen on shoving people or animals into neat little categories. But anyway. Blather follows.

The 17th century, cats, being a female Whovian, English, music )

17th century, baroquepr0n, muzak, memery, the black beast of aaaaargh, doctor who, fannishness, languages, life the universe & everything

Cats are totally feminine, in the classic sense of the word. Even the manliest boy cats I've ever shared my house with have not been Arnold Schwarzenegger manly, more 1970s David Bowie manly. I have a herd of tiny furry Ziggy Stardusts slinking about the place.

Mmmmm, Siouxsie.

It's hard to use terms like that without sounding sexist, though. But 70s Bowie would be just about the perfect way to describe the thing I mean:).

If using Bowie as a standard unit of manliness is wrong, well then I don't want to be right. :-D

I usually use him as an example when I have to explain to people how I tend to fancy more feminine men. He works pretty well for that. *uses him harder*

I have to say, I'm always very jealous of people who can speak more than one language. Foreign languages were always my worst subject as school. Perhaps it was because I didn't know the grammar of my own language well enough (Verb conjugation? What is this crazy French invention?) but I always found learning another language to be tear-inducingly frustrating.

I know what you mean about cats. I was glad when we got a male cat because we'd only had girls before, but he's not much more butch than his sister. He's a great fat swaggering pimp.

That's interesting, because trying to figure out mathematical-spatial stuff was always the tear-inducingly frustrating thing for me (but my brain compensates for that by having overdeveloped language centers). I can pick up languages and accents and lilts really easily, to the point where people think I'm taking the piss when I gradually start talking in the same accent as they do.

And fat swaggering pimp cats are awesome. I am so amused that you picked a Six icon to go with that statement. *g*

You know, I'm always fascinated to hear female OldSkool Whofans' experiences, because while my first introduction to Doctor Who was with the new series (and, okay, accidentally watching "City of Death" on PBS when I was eleven and not understanding a bit of it), I've never gotten into Whofandom-as-a-whole. I read fic and I ship people in the new series, but I've never wanted to join any of the comms, because I just get this vibe that you've got to be a squealing little fangirl obsessed with Tennant's cock or Billie's career or whatever. Not that obsession is bad - I just kind of resent the implication that I'm not in it for anything else.

And then I started watching OldSkool eps - some Three, a boatload of Five because oh my god, Ainley, some Six and Seven - and I started chatting with some OldSkool fen, and wow, it just feels so good to talk about things other than actors or prettiness. Again, I'm hideously generalizing and I should probably stop that right now, but you're right. The thing I love most about Who is that it's " ( ... )

Glad to hear that. I know I'm generalising a lot, but it is also bloody annoying when people conform to those stereotypes--squeey fangirls who love the atrocious Ten/Rose characterisation because it's sooooooromantiiiiccclol!!!1 or stuck-up fanboys who complain about the TARDIS windows being the wrong size. And I'm really glad you're enjoying talking to us grumpy, bitter oldskoolers. *g* Because I, for one, prefer good characterisation to good SFX. I was pleasantly surprised that fandom really embraced Donna because she got some characterisation *beyond* the "travels with the Doctor because she is in love with him" thing, which I find condescending. None of the previous companions needed to fancy the Doctor to travel with him (and if they did fall in love, it was a part of that character's progress, really).

And I know I'm stuck-up and scary and angry a lot of the time, so I appreciate anyone who's not too afraid to comment. *g*

Also, *Ainley*. Fuck and *yes*.

It is. It really is. I have a few RL friends that are Those Fangirls - the kind who rabidly ship Ten/Rose because she is OMG SPECHUL and stalk conventions trying to slip RPF to Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. And whenever they try and draw me into squee about NuWho, they end up slagging off on OldSkool or saying something ridiculous (my one friend has tried to tell me repeatedly that Rose is the most badass companion because she had a Big Fucking Gun in JE, and I just have to go "Ace McShane killed a Dalek with a baseball bat. The end." and then go lie down before I have an aneurysm at her replies of "OMG ROSE IS SPESHUL THE DOCTOR LUVS HER LIKE NO ONE ELSE").

And I'm really glad you're enjoying talking to us grumpy, bitter oldskoolers.

Hey, Bitter Old Fandom Queen solidarity. It's not my first time at the BOFQ rodeo.

Dear god, batchippers need to be drowned in various lakes. Repeatedly. Rose has nothing on most Oldskool companions and that's a fact. There are, of course, some Oldskool stories that are rubbish, but in general, it kicks the arse of the new series. At least the old companions had, y'know, CHARACTER and actually showed up with those big damn knives/Nitro-9/big brains when they *first appeared*, not later and not because all they wanted was the Doctor's wuuub. Ace would make Rose cry. And then Leela would chop off her head and use it as a bowling ball.

And some of the most interesting people are the scariest, yes. Not too long ago, I would go into panic attacks at just *seeing* versaphile around, and now we're creating epic fic together and shit. Not that we don't have our Issues and clashes, still, but anyway. It is a bit depressing sometimes when almost all the really cool people are prone to emo and panic and are socially clumsy and more than a bit crazy in the head. Seems like that's the price to pay for being sensitive and artistic and ( ... )
