All-Time Fave: Starts With a Spin by Maxine

Since my " Best Drarry of the Year" lists start with 2007, I haven't had a chance to rec some of the classics, which is an oversight I intend to rectify. And what better time than Rectober?

Even though everyone and her sister must already have read this one, it just feels criminal to call oneself a Drarry reccer and not have recced the Grandaddy of all Harry/Draco 'Party Game' fics :)

Summary: It started with the spin of a bottle, and now Harry and Draco have gotten themselves so far into their own game there's almost no way out again. Except to keep playing.

Why I love it:
This is such a terrifically fun story that zips along effortlessly. Even though the premise is a little hard to believe (Harry and Draco keep participating in weekly house-unity party games, even though the challenges they're given start at kissing and go farther every time) you can't help but go along with it.

Harry and Draco really, really hate each other at the outset, and aren't attracted to one another at all. But it doesn't take long before they start practicing with each other in between so that they don't look like awkward virgins when everyone is watching!

What's also great about this story is that it takes this somewhat silly premise and builds and builds on the physical to showcase the emotional relationship that grows between them. Sex IS the plot for the most part (and it's great and hot), but other serious happenings do slip in. Wonderfully done. Ron, Hermione, Pansy, and Seamus are cool too, so that's a plus :)

Excerpt:
“Look, Potter, here’s the thing. I don’t like you. I hate losing to you, I hate...embarrassing myself in front of you-”

“Aww, Malfoy, I’m touched."

“Shut up, Potter!” He dragged another hand through his hair, and Harry realized this must be a nervous gesture of his. “As I was saying…as much as I hate all of that…I’d rather lose face to just one person rather than fifteen or twenty. And it’s not like I know what I’m doing, because I’ve certainly never…never done it to anyone before.” Draco stopped talking there, brow furrowed and lips pressed thinly together, but Harry kept waiting for him to continue.

“And that means…?” Harry prompted, when he realized nothing else was coming. Draco sighed and walked over to lean against the desk that Harry was sitting on. He crossed his arms again and started tapping his foot against the floor, before finally blurting out his answer.

“It means I think we should practice before Saturday.”
