First off, is this 500GB Drive a Seagate 500GB SATA drive? if so, check the drive's firmware version. if it's SD15, chances are you got a defective drive. if you go to the seagate website, punch in your S/N from your HD into their website and they'll tell you if it's one of the affected ones. if it is, you can send it back to Seagate and they'll do a data recovery for free (so they claimed on their website).

If it's not a Seagate, contact the manufacturer of your drive and have them replace it under warranty. Samsung, Seagate, and Western Digital all have 3 year warranties on consumer drives. Seagate's the fastest to respond to customer requests, Western Digital is a very close second, and I have no idea about Samusng as I've yet to return a Samsung drive.

The problems you've reported with your computer strongly suggest a HD problem, not a power supply (PSU) problem. That said, it's still possible for a PSU to be faulty, though in your case, it doesn't sound like it as you haven't mentioned any of the faulty PSU signs...

If you need a hand figuring out what's wrong, feel free to MSN me at either home or work.

Best of luck!
