(Gargandi snilld) Screaming Masterpieces
Directed by: Air Alexander Ergis Magnússon
2005

Screaming Masterpieces is a film about the unique music scene of the island country Iceland. In the last decade of electronica music, if a band has done something unconventional chances are they come from Iceland. In the film, it discusses why a country of only 300,000 have such a strong interests in the arts. Specifically music. Combining live concert footage with band interviews the film documents the quick advance of electronica in Iceland.

The film covers all sort of artists. From the more mainstream such as Siguor Rous and Bjork to smaller groups like the Apparat Organ Quartet, Johen Johansen, Bang Gang, Bjork, Rice Boy Sleeps, Parachutes and many others. The films centralized message is on the creativity and original of Iceland artists. Yet even though many of the artists share this common thread they all differ in the sound they create. Each group creating its music for a different reason and a different way.

By watching this film and conducting my interview with Leeni, I’m learning that no persons reason for creating electronica is alike. There is such a different attitude toward the music in general. Music can be anything you want it to be, you are not restricted to the idea of a drummer, bassists and guitarists. While technology in the modern world advances so does a whole musical genre. There is so much more we can do now then we could do twenty years ago. Electronica embraces both the creativity and individually that technology has provided to artists.

I’m learning that you have to make the music for yourself. There is no layout to follow when making electronica. You have to know what you want to do and just do it.
