I am in Billings, Montana right now. I think I've driven over 1000 miles now but I've lost count. My brain is also turning to mush from the monotony of driving hours and hours every day. I've distilled down some random facts from what I've seen over the past 4 days:
(1) Iowa is a very bad place to be right now. I saw the water levels almost touching the road. I am kind of glad to have crossed the bridge to Nebraska before it got worse.
(2) There are a lot of country music radio stations in the Western states (at least, before you get to the Pacific coast). Too many actually.
(3) Wearing a Royals t-shirt will occasionally invite small talk from people such as "You're a Royals fan huh? They aren't doing too well right now." What else is new... when was the last time they did well? Just stating the obvious. Just like you did, people!!
(4) Apparently a lot of people die in South Dakota on the highways. They put up markers at every spot someone has died. It feels kind of morbid to pass all of these in additional to all the tiny graveyards alongside the highways.
(5) South Dakota has a lot of touristy crap in it. I get the impression that state would have almost no economy without it. (Well that's not true... there's still gold in them thar hills, right? And I heard they're building an oil refinery there)
(6) The Western states do a good job of milking their 1800s-era past as much as possible and have a ton of museums, historical markers, historical sites, souvenir shops, etc.
(7) Wyoming is scenic but the towns are very spartan. (Maybe this is a good thing, though)
(8) Montana is very, very large and I am stuck in the middle of it right now. I think I will be out of it by Tuesday.
I'll arrive at my destination on Wednesday. Now I have to get back behind the wheel again... whee.
