First off, I’m not really anti-gun. My dad owns over 100 guns and I would probably own one too if he offered to give me one. I am, however, anti-gun-people. I won’t say I hate every person who is pro-gun, but I do think their beliefs, in regards to guns, are fucking stupid.
If it were up to most gun people, absolutely anyone could own a gun. Background checks would never be required. You would be able to carry a gun anywhere, including schools. Hell, kids may even be carrying guns to school with them! Wouldn’t that be fun?
So here’s why I’m bitter today…Virginia passed legislation to allow people with conceal to carry permits to carry guns in restaurants and bars that serve alcohol. Not such a great idea…but here’s why it’s ok…it says they can carry their toys so long as they “are not consuming alcohol”. I guess that makes it okay! I mean, the law is the same with driving and people listen to that law…oh wait! No they don’t!
According to the statistics on the MADD website (which may well be slightly padded), 11,773 people in the US died in alcohol related crashes in 2008. 294 of those deaths were in VA. I’ll add that I know many many people that drive drunk all the time and don’t get caught. I’ll venture to say that probably well over 50% of people on the road after 1:00am are drunk.
So, what does that say about drunks and guns? Nothing maybe. The statistics could be unrelated. I just wanted to point out that alcohol doesn’t mix well with deadly weapons. Deadly weapons in that case being vehicles. Oh wait…here’s one…between 55%-75% of all homicides that occur in the US involve alcohol.
I found a site that list issues related to alcohol and aggression. I’m not going to link to it because it’s really just common sense. Something interesting that it touched on was that a ridiculous percentage of aggressive behavior is related to alcohol and/or being in a bar or club. That’s no shocker.
Alcohol makes you do stupid things. No one can be a truly responsible drunk no matter how hard you try. If you drink a lot, chances are you will occasionally get black out drunk and do something you regret. This is when people will end up shot.
But who knows? Maybe I’ll be completely wrong and bars will be a safer place now that I know a lot of people will be packing. But I doubt it.
