The title above has nothing to do with the post, other than that the song is stuck in my head and iTunes does not have the Eydie Gorme recording of it in their store. Why do you disappoint me, iTunes? Seriously, we may need to spend some time apart - I don't know if I can stay with a music store that does not satisfy my love of pop music from the 40s through the 60s.
Today was a lovely Saturday. I went hiking in the hills, despite still feeling a little sore from work yesterday. I veered off to the left up into the hills until I hit the five-way intersection of trails on a small plateau. After taking the far right trail, I crossed a small stream and reached another intersection. As I was trying to decide which way to go (left and up toward the main trail or right and up to the reservoir), I noticed movement on the left. There was a deer standing in the trail, ears erect, tail twitching as it looked at me. We stared at one another for a moment, and I decided to take the other path and leave the deer alone. The reservoir trail follows a small stream, with miniature falls and mossy log bridges where the trees have fallen. I found a dead raccoon in the stream - fairly fresh, it still had all its fur, but was missing the eyes. I examined it with a stick for a minute or two, deciding that it must have been ill or old. (The face mask was very grey, and the coyotes hadn't munched on it yet.) I made my way to the cement reservoir, and spent a bit of time on top of it - first, admiring the view, then dancing to my music like a wild thing. I continued winding my way through the trails, and eventually passed two more deer in a clearing. One was lying down and one was grazing off a small tree - they both looked at me, pricking their ears on alert. I passed them again on my way back, still grazing in the same clearing together. And on my back past the reservoir, I found a coyote skull - a young one, probably an older pup.
By the time I got back to the farm, I was really wishing I had taken my camera with me. But the exercise felt good, and it really cheered me up. I've been a bit lazy lately, and didn't realize how much it was affecting my mood until I went for the hike. Much better now!
