So, when my Dad visited, he was very worried about the heat in my apartment. Particularly that I couldn't get the kitchen windows open, since opening those and the balcony window would create an excellent cross-breeze for ventilation. Dad tried to force the windows, but couldn't get anywhere with them, and I promised I would ask my BoE or my landlady about it. Well, tonight, I tried fiddling with the windows on my own. It turns out that the kitchen windows have two sets of locks and only one set was unlocked. Aren't we smart?
But I now have a good cross-breeze going, and it will hopefully help keep the apartment cooler during the worst of the summer heat. Also, Dad gave me a good hint on keeping the bugs out of my apartment, even with the windows open. I can have my windows open without any bugs getting in through the cracks twixt screen and sill. The secret is to spray the window sill and frame with bug spray. The bugs won't come in. I just tried this for the first time tonight, and I haven't even seen a gnat. :D
Now I am cool(-er), and bug free in my apartment. Note to self: thank Dad for the advice.
