The "-ough" words ! always a problem. I once heard Bill Bryson giving a talk at the Edinburgh (Edin-burrah) Festival. (Americans pronounce it "Edin-bro") Bill pointed out to his audience that Scots pronounce it "Ednbr" (Eden- brr). I hope my atteps at phonetics are OK.

Bill Bryson is one of my favourite writers! His "Mother Tongue" is great! I also read "Notes from a Small Island" and even translated some part of it into Russian. The part that I love most of all is the beginning of the book, it is hilariously funny! He has such a great love to Great Britain! I was quite surprised to learn that he is American.

I'm 99% sure he is American, but Canadian might be a possibility.

Interesting bio, thanks for the link. Bryson always seems to me to be a person able to communicate ideas etc to anyone at any level. I'm sure if we ever met I would have a very interesting meeting! He appears to be a thoroughtly nice man.

David Sedaris has a home in rural Sussex and spends some time there. He certainly has a sense of humour different to other authors/commentators. Often I cannot help laughing aloud when I hear his stories. Glad you like him.

American - I just Googled him! Do you know David Sedaris? He sometimes has a series on BBC Radio 4 reading from his books etc. He is hilarious! You might get some Youtube clips simply by Googling his name.
