Um. This was hard. I'm still extremely not happy with it, especially the ending. But there was nothing else to be done for it. What follows is a disjointed look down memory lane. Or something.

*

When Veronica was twelve years old she took scuba diving lessons. Her mother insisted that it would be a good way to meet people and make friends. Her father played along good-naturedly, figuring it was a skill that might come in handy in the seaside town they just moved to. Veronica was an easy going child, so she didn’t bother to mention there were easier ways to meet people. Like, say, at the mall.

She met the girl with the large, wide-set eyes the very first day. The girl strutted (that was the only word for it) out of the changing rooms and joined a boy her age. She appeared completely aware of the eyes on her. The girl looked to be the same age as Veronica, except for the attitude that fairly exuded from her every pore. Plus there was the fact that she was definitely beating Veronica in the race to Puberty with a capital ‘P’.

The boy next to her didn’t seem impressed. Instead, he rolled his eyes and when he caught Veronica’s curious gaze, he smiled.

Lilly and Duncan Kane became Veronica’s new friends shortly after.

Lilly, in fact, was the one who declared Veronica her new best friend, swimming over to her side in the pool and whispering loud enough for the boy to hear, “You and I are going to be partners. This way you won’t get stuck with my dorky brother.” She threw a grin at the boy, who simply rolled his eyes again.

“I’m Lilly Kane, and that’s Duncan. He’s a little strange,” she said with an air of mystery. Veronica smiled and offered her own name, which made Lilly’s eyes grow even larger. “Veronica Mars? That is the coolest name ever!”

Veronica’s smile turned into a pleased grin and she decided her mom knew a good idea when she saw one after all.

*

Lilly scared Veronica half to death shortly after.

Lilly was good at that, though this marked the first time she did so. When Veronica glanced at the water and saw her best friend at the bottom of the pool like a stone, she screamed and jumped in. She heard Duncan yelling something.

Veronica dove, the chlorine stinging her eyes. She was suddenly convinced that Lilly’s tank ran out of air and tried to remember what the instructor had taught them on that subject.

Not that it would have made a difference; in her terror, Veronica understandably hadn’t thought to bring another set of equipment with her.

As it turned out, it still wouldn’t have made a difference even if she had, because Lilly was faking. When her head emerged from the water, she laughed as she swung her hair back, droplets arcing through air.

“Come on, Veronica, who better to liven this place up than moi?”

Lilly invited Veronica over to her house for the first time shortly after.

Veronica had seen the huge estates before but never from the inside. She walked around like a child at Disneyland, but tried to hide her awe. She didn’t want Lilly to think she was lame.

The three of them swam in the Kane’s equally large and scenic pool. Lilly pretended she got her foot caught in one of the filters. Veronica was starting to catch on to her friend’s more annoying habits by now, and only got a twinge of fright. Duncan fell for it every time.

*

Their scuba class went to the beach to test their skills shortly after.

Lilly yelled “shark!” and promptly received a failing grade. Nothing was ever much fun without her, so Veronica quit and joined soccer instead.

*

Lilly is killed what seems like shortly after.

Looking down at her best friend’s broken body, Veronica feels as though all the air has gone out of her tank. The brilliant blue-green of the water reflects with the lights and bounces over Lilly’s face, forever frozen in time. Forever young and beautiful.

Veronica knows Lilly is not joking.

End.
