Vent

I am so irritated with my attending this month that I seriously find myself fighting the urge to tell him to fuck off. He reminds me a lot of Chevy Chase's character on 'Community'-- dumb, but thinks he's the shit. They look a lot alike, too.

I was on in-house call on Wednesday night with two of the interns. We were all up until after 2am, we all admitted patients (in fact, I admitted more than one of them), and I was carrying more patients total than the two of them combined. But when the 30-hour mark came, this asshole attending realizes that we've all been there for 30 hours, and the priority becomes getting the interns out as fast as possible. This wouldn't usually piss me off, but when someone pointed out that I was post-call, too, he went off on some tangent about how it's okay to abuse medical students because we can technically break the 80-hour work week regulations without anybody getting in trouble for it. So, we see all of the interns' patients, then all of the other patients, and then mine LAST! We didn't finish rounding until after 1pm, and since this asshole wants me to write notes for these patients that wouldn't usually have to get written (ie; hospital courses for admits <48 hours and progress notes for patients admitted the same day), I was there until after 2pm (2 fucking pm!) putzing on the computer and making phone calls. That's a 31 hour day. Which, okay, is only an hour over, but if not for his ass-backward logic, both myself AND the interns could have gone home 2 hours earlier. And I can't complain about it to anyone. So, here's my rant and that's about all I can do about it. I'm on call every 4 nights, and if this whole 'screw over the student because we can't get in trouble for it' routine continues, I'm going to flip OUT.

Lastly, and this is stupid but I think it paints a slightly more accurate picture about what this guy is like... I told him yesterday about how much he reminds me of the Community character and he tells me it's been decades since he's watched NBC, Fox News is all he watches. I joked about Glen Beck and he says, in all seriousness, "That man is spot on". Should have guessed after sitting through 20 minute discourses about the democrats being the problem with with healthcare every morning during our 5-hour rounds. Grrrr....

It's just hard because in the real world I would not come even close to putting up with this sort of crap, but in the medicine world you have to take it. And that's bullshit. There is no other profession that I can think of where the social rules inside the workplace and outside the workplace differ so vastly. Like the 45 year old med student with many incredible life experiences and past successes being berated by and submissive to some intern half his age. Just wouldn't happen.
