I stay away from making anti-Bush rants, despite my strong feelings about his incompetence, or my extreme distrust and loathe for his cabinet of oil-barons and private sector blow-hards who are more concerned about the administration's PR image than accomplishing anything or sticking to any kind of ethical standards. There are many people out there, more people than conservatives would like to admit, that are saying the exact same things and putting them alot better than I ever can. But this one time I have to break my silence on Bush to talk about what's probably the most asshat examples of bad politics I've seen so far during this administration.
Bush's nomination to supreme court, one Harriet Miers.
Nevermind the argument that she was never a judge, plenty of judges have served on the supreme court bench who had no prior experience judging. Most recent examples include William Renquest, John Marhshall, Robert Jackson, and Lewis Powell. No, there's a deeper issue at work and Mier's inexperience isn't why anyone’s pissed off at the situation.
Harriet Miers and Bush go way back, she was at one time his personal Attorny and then became Counsel to his 1994 governor campaign. For this she was appointed chair of the Texas Lottery Commission until 2000. When Bush was elected Pres in 2000 (by the supreme court depending on who you believe, but thats another rant about how fucked up things are) she was made staff secretary, then replaced Alberto Gonzales as White House Counsel in 2005.
Before all this She graduated law school in 1972, become president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrel and then co-manager of Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP. And then became President of the Texas State Bar in 1992, the first woman to occupy the position.
So, to expound on her credentials Mier was on the Bush team since the beginning (or before that if you count being Bush's personal attorney) and, due to her penchant for political tea-bagging, was able to make it to the top. Her class A brown-nosing is further demonstrated by this quote I found on nnbd.com (great website to find information on.. everything)
Former Bush speechwriter David Frum opined on 29 September 2005:
"In the White House that hero worshipped the president, Miers was distinguished by the intensity of her zeal: She once told me that the president was the most brilliant man she had ever met."
This is starting to sound like patronage/cronyism at it's worst. If anything, appointing former Arabian show-horse judge Michael Brown as FEMA director proves that people get seriously fucked over when the president appoints people based on how far their nose is shoved up his asshole. Supreme court justices serve for life, so until this bitch is like 80 and retires she's going to be hearing cases and making decisions that will effect each and everyone of us in some minuscule or major way.
Two reasons I conceive of why she was appointed above anyone else with a mouth full of Bush's cock. A third reason could be the combination of these two:
Bush is a puppet for all intents and purposes, most major decision making and the direction of the administration is controlled by Cheney/Rove/Rice(although I'm pretty sure Rice's role is mostly that of token black, but she's well aware of this and plays her part to a T). So hopefully this is Bush in his toddler-like way trying to say "see I appoint judge! I chose Judge! Finally I president!" then proceeding to shit his diaper and cry until someone changes it.
However..
I have a sinking feeling that this is the appointment of a judge with an agenda shared by Bush and pals. Much like Roberts, who despite what the media will say has a very conservative leaning (he believes in a strict and narrow interpretation of the constitution and although won't admit to any of his personal views has been quoted as saying Roe V. Wade should be overturned), Mier's job is to help push decision making in the court as far to the right as possible, to help make the era of a Christian theocracy more realizable complete with banning abortion and gay marriage and introducing prayer and intelligent design into schools. Don't believe me, you say? I'm a paranoid nut-job, you say? Fine, but at least look at the President's record. On social issues regarding gay marriage, stem cells, religion in school, abortion, oh fuck ANYTHING Bush has sided with the evangelicals. And if there's one thing that's pretty obvious about evangelicals its that they think America is founded on Christian values and is therefore a Christian nation (which is plausible if you pretend the first amendment doesn't exist). At this point I'm very tempted to delve into the hypocritical notion of activists judges, and bitch about why for some reason only liberal judges or moderates making objective decisions contradicting conservative ideals (any opponent of prayer in schools for instance) are considered 'activists', but a judge's blatant conservatism in his or her decision making is ignored. But I won't get into it.
So if you want to see the country go back in time 100 years in terms of any kind of progressive legislation and move forward as a theocratic state where attending church is mandatory and the media is state-run complete with evening prayer (kind of like in Ireland, and we all know how much combining church and state has helped that country), then you probably see this whole situation as a positive step forward.
If that’s the case than fuck you. I'm fucking tired of turning on the TV and seeing your convoluted world view influencing policy decisions and seeing your dumbass religious morals being made into law every day. You’ve won, congratulations fuckheads. The process has been set into motion and the American Taliban is fast turning this country into a neo-fascist religious dictatorship. One of these days I'm going to see rows of young men marching down the street, except instead of swastikas on their arm-bands its going to be crosses.
