Captain Treville (The Musketeers) - an appreciation

Apr 24, 2015 21:45

While "The Musketeers" focuses on d'Artagnan and his three best buddies, the BBC version of Captain Jean-Armand Treville has become my favorite character of the show.

I feel he is still underappreciated by the fandom (there's hardly any Treville centric fanfiction AT ALL!) so I hope this post will change that. A bit at least.

So who is Captain Treville?
  • For starters, he is the proverbial "Captain Dad". His men respect and love him. He might be sometimes hard on them (but always fair) but he also is very protective of them. I am sure, if he could he would adopt all of his Musketeers. And the king. And all the girls they rescued in that one episode.

  • Treville has a lot of integrity and is extremely honourable - but he doesn't hesitate to compromise his morals TO GET SHIT DONE (unlike Athos, btw).
  • He is extremely loyal to his men, the king (+queen) and country (yes, in this order).
  • He is also a very good commander and fighter, that's what he lives for. In one episode he even was called "legendary" (and is then promptly defeatet ^^). In his youth he must have been a brilliant fighter (he is still quite good btw), probably even better than Athos.
  • Being so close to the king and holding his grounds against the cardinal he must be quite good at politics even though he detests it.
  • Even though he doesn't suffer fools lightly he tends to tolerate the misadventures of Athos, Porthos and Aramis (ok, he knows they are good at what they are doing and they have good intetions, but still, it can't be easy to be their commanding officer)
  • He may have done shady things for his king and country (Savoy) or honour (The thing about Porthos, wich - to be honest - was extremely badly written). But one thing he can't do is tell a good lie, at least to his fellow musketeers (I guess his heart wasn't really in it). And he really should learn to give better explanations - if he had told Porthos the whole truth from the beginning, "The prodigal Father" would have been a very short - and better - episode. And Porthos would have believed and forgiven him, I am sure of it.
  • Even Milady seems to like Treville or at least respects him enough, that she tries to defend him when Rochefort argues to remove him from his post.
  • Not accepting the King's offer for becoming Minister was his biggest mistake. Well, at least at the end of the season he did the right thing AND the king created a whole new ministry for Treville *g*.
  • One question though: Why did Marie de' Medici throw him in prison? (The whole episode was awesome and I loved how Treville reacted to her scheming and how he worked with the cardinal to defeat her)
  • Sarcasm. Nuff said.
Now to the visual. This is really important, because I have the feeling, the creators of the show wanted to make him look older and battered in Season 1. And in Season 2 he is suddenly way more actively involved and extremley handsome and sexy. Seriously, I have visual proof and I am very curious about why they made this decision.

But first the statistics:

Season 1
  • active Fights: 3
  • Most Epic Fight: Episode 08 against Martin Lebarge - here he fights to protect is boys from this maniac, but in the end he loses (in my opinion he lost because he became a bit cocky getting that blow against Lebarge's arm)
  • Episodes featuring an open shirt: NONE
Season 2
  • active Fights: 5 (kind of surprising, because he is way more active this season and it felt that he was in more fights)
  • Most Epic Fight: 2x05 (it IS kind of my favorite episode of all because we see Treville totally in his element by fighting bad guys and shouting commands at everyone in the vicinity. Love it!)

  • Episodes featuring an open shirt: 7 (but, to be fair, in two of them he is wounded and  wearing bandages, so you hardly can see his chest *coughs*)

Fun little visual facts:
  • In Season 1 his beard is similar to the cardinal's. In Season two his beard is way more sexy and awesome and resembles Aramis' (only with a cleaner cut and shave *g*)
  • He doesn't wear one of these "Uniform" shoulder guard. Why? It totally baffles me. He does in the intro of season 2 although it's only the temporary one that d'Artagnan got in episode 1x08). I understand how he'd be a special case as long as he's the captain but shouldn't he have had to wear it once he lost his command?

And finally now the visual comparison:
(Don't get me wrong, I already liked Treville a lot in season 1 but to be honest I seriously got the hots for him in the middle of season 2)

First of all, the intro:
Back in the season 1 intro Treville's the only character of whom you only see a shadow (I really don't get why they did it! Shame on them)! In season 2 you can finally see him in all his glory. And with his season 2 facial hair. Yay! As asthenie_vd pointed out I am totally wrong. The season 1 intro is the silhouette of Aramis not Treville. Which makes it even worse BECAUSE NOW THERE IS NO TREVILLE IN THE SEASON 1 INTRO AT ALL!

The clothes and the facial hair:

In season 1 he always wears that one leather coat, that totally closes him off. The season 2 jacket (that we first see in episode 1x08, great episode, don't you think) must be extremely more comfortable and looks way better on him.

You know, I really prefer the facial hair of season 2. Again, it makes him look way hotter and I find the style extremely interesting. I can't look away! (And the season 2 haircut is also way better, I mean, yeah, his heair might be thin and he might not have that much, but just look at episode 1x08 and you can see what I mean.

AThen we have the open shirt look that makes him look extremely HOT. Seriously, I could always eat him up when I see him like that *rarrrr*

In contrast, here's what must have been most he "revealed" in season 1. A shame, really:

The scars and hair:

As I mentioned, in season 1 he looks battered. There is a scar at his right eye and one below his left eye (quite hard to see here, sorry). Those scars fade in season 2 or are gone completely.

The season 1 cut makes him appear way older. His hair looks a bit wild, while in season 2 it's more groomed.

And here he is in mourning for his boyfriend the cardinal

This is serious business. Because he wears his battle armor and looks quite commanding.

In addition to being an amazing actor (just watch the scenes of Aramis taking out the ball!) but Hugo Speer is also a wonderful, funny and cute guy:
