Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc)

Cosplayers at least go outside to anime conventions and have a social life :D

My personal definition of otaku, and exactly what I mean when I use it. I'm not exactly sure of the dictionary definition of otaku, as I have never bothered looking it up
