Running around the corner and into a level three sentry's line of fire was not the smartest thing he had ever done in his life but he died all the time. Big deal. Blowing up and going to respawn happened just about every day.
Coming out of the dark and into the world once again he the respawn sickness was a lot worse than it had been in a long time. Worse even, maybe. His thoughts were fogged by the churning feeling in his insides and an explosion of pain. It was almost like being hit by the rockets all over again.
The young man doubled over, coughing violently and dropping his bat to the floor. His vision blurred and when he could focus again it was hard to miss the blood on the floor. Was that his?
Oh fuck.
It felt like his whole body was shaking like he was going to collapse and die all over again but that kind of thing didn't happen, not here. Right? It was more like a nightmare or some horror story Sniper would tell to discourage him from ever thinking about trying another base.
There was a sensation like a bucket of ice water being poured through his veins and his legs gave out from under him but he didn't hit the floor right away as he expected to. Someone had caught him and eased him down onto the tiles. He hadn't even known that there was someone else in the room. Soon he was flat on his back and looking up at a pale and surprisingly frightened looking Sniper who seemed to examining him critically.
The front of his shirt was lifted and it peeled away from his skin unpleasantly. That was when he dimly realized that it was soaked with blood. His blood. "The fuck-?" His breathing was ragged and it was difficult to speak, his lungs barely felt like they were working.
"Don't talk Daniel." The words only just registered with him. "I know it hurts, shut your eyes and it will be over soon. The respawn will have another go and I'll be here when you come back. You'll be okay."
He couldn't tell if Sniper was lying to him or not. He kept on talking but Dan didn't really hear any more of it. He wondered if he would see his mom again, see Remi, hear from Myron or any of the others who left
He could feel a firm grip on his hand just as everything faded back to black again.
