I'm declaring myself a workaholic... 24 hours... in 2 days... 3 left to go... 1 is Saturday which is a guaranteed 10 hour day.
If y'all have been wondering where I've been lately... work and if not work then sleeping. Yesterday I got to see friends I haven't seen in ages. It was my day off and a few of my friends from high school came up to my mom's house. We went to a lunch, movie, bowling, and ice cream. Of course we had to have ice cream at like 10:30 at night so I'm hyper and I had to be at work early this morning. And by early I mean before 7 which means I have to leave my house by 6 in the AM.
Today at work... This morning went pretty well. Not too busy with appointments and only one surgery. The surgery was a spay of a 113lb Akita. She is one of the sweetest dogs, especially for her size and breed. She was of course overweight and in heat which makes the spay a little harder, but still, nonetheless, we all thought it wouldn't take too long. In fact we even talked about adding on a dental. Well, in the end it's a good thing we didn't add on that dental...
Normal surgeries include one nurse and one doctor. Not today. It took 2 doctors and 2-3 nurses and almost 2.5 hours before the end of the surgery. Most of the time LEM had the pulse and I had the CRT and the breathing for the animal. 008 and 009 were the doctors up to their elbows (practically) in the dog (Mylinda, you're probably the only one who understand the notation here). Normal surgery pack involves 30 gauze pieces, we used close to 90. LEM even did a gauze count to make sure we had all of the pieces before we closed her up. JPB ended up having to come change our fluids for us during the middle of the surgery because we had already went through the entire liter bag. It took about 5 surgical scrubs to sterilize the dog before we could even begin the surgery because she was so dirty and then literally the whole uterus was just huge. Plus the docs were having problems with bleeding because the dog was just so fat and again in heat. And to make matters worse the owner kept calling during the surgery asking all sorts of crazy questions and wanting to talk to the doctor!!! I don't think she understood the fact that the doctor was in surgery... on her dog! It was just a crazy mess. Don't worry guys, the dog is doing just fine and going home tomorrow. All in all, it was a great experience, just a long one.
Then after the surgery, we ended up having an emergency with a ferret. The poor thing was panting and very lethargic, but she as well is now doing just fine and at home as you are reading this.
After a 14 hour day, I feel ready to pass out. Just to do it again tomorrow. YAY for exciting jobs and lots of hours.
