[voice]

[If someone's looking to hear more than just a voice, they can catch the sounds of a piece of paper being worried over. Folded, unfolded, half-crumpled and smoothed, repeated like clockwork. And maybe, just maybe, the occasional quiet curse. It continues for a minute. When Usopp finally speaks, he sounds conflicted and strained.]These letters. A ( Read more... )

[Brook had gone to sit outside the building earlier for some fresh air and to play his violin, which you may be able to hear. The journal is open at his side - he likes being able to see what's happening with the people in Luceti, and he's been hearing a lot of talk about these letters. He found his own under his hat a few minutes ago]

So you received one as well, Usopp-san? It seems everyone is. I must admit, I'm not sure what to think about them.

Nami says it's a trick. Luffy doesn't trust them.

[What better explanation is there?]

Oh? [Pause - you may be able to catch a few notes of Bink's Sake] Well I would think that they would know best about this, ne?

[Really, it's the only explanation needed. He's not going anywhere without the rest of his nakama, and he thinks he knows them all well enough to assume they're of the same mindset] Though I wouldn't have minded to return home, if they had thought otherwise.

I wouldn't have, either. But they do know more about this place.

[Hesitating now.] Hey Brook.

Yes, Usopp-san?

Do you think...Do you think they're really okay back home?

[Sure he'd told Chopper as much, but he knows better than anyone that you don't have to believe something to tell it to somebody else.]

... [You'd probably know better than him about this one, Usopp. The last thing he saw before Kuma sent him flying was Zoro disappearing.]

Our nakama are strong. If anyone could face that man and be all right, it would be them. [It's hard for him not to be worried though, being one of the few to have seen what happened with Kuma at Thriller Bark] How were things looking after my departure?

Right. Of course they are.

[Departure. Much better word than 'annihilation' or 'disappearance.' Less frightening to think about.] I-they were- [sigh] I don't really know. It went too fast and I was next in line.

[That's not very reassuring, Usopp. He wishes he knew what happened to him after Kuma's attack] I was hoping that the rest of you would've been all right...

[Oh hi there, guilt. Of all the times to be HONEST about something. But it's not like he could have told him everything was fine when he didn't know. Not about this kind of thing.]

Sorry.

[Try some optimism?] We'll just- we'll have to be all right, won't we? Like you said, our nakama are strong. We can make it on our own long enough to get back to the Sunny, if that's what we have to do in our world.

[why is he not better at this]

[Optimism is good!] Of course we will! Of that I have no doubt! It is unfortunate that we were separated in the first place, but that cannot be changed. The only option is to move forward, and do our best to find each other once again!

[Oh good, he clearly agrees with the optimism plan. And he's better at it, too.]

Exactly.
